CLINTON, Miss. – Rivals are meant to bring the best out of one another. American Southwest Conference East Division rivals Louisiana College and Mississippi College did not fail to live up to that axiom.
What was meant to be a pair of seven-innings games between the Lady Cats (17-3, 8-2 ASC East) and Lady Choctaws (16-10, 7-7 ASC East) turned into a 23-innings marathon with MC winning 8-7 in the 13-inning Game 1 and LC winning 9-8 in the 10-inning Game 2.
For the second time in a week, LC rebounded from a Game 1 loss to split with an ASC East opponent.
On Saturday, the Lady Cats came from behind to defeat Texas-Tyler by one in their last at-bat. Tuesday, they surrendered a three-run lead in the bottom of the seventh but managed to win Game 2 thanks to an RBI single by
Meggie Burkett (West Monroe, La./West Monroe HS) and RBI double by
Emily Douglas (Gonzales, La./St. Amant HS) in the top of the 10th.
Even though Mississippi College scored am unearned run in the bottom of the inning, sophomore
Rudi Aycock (Olla, La./LaSalle HS), who pitched all 10 innings of the late game, was able to strike out a batter and force a fly out to end the game.
Aycock (4-0) struck out four while walking five and allowing 10 hits in the game. Four of the eight runs scored against her were unearned.
Kim Mason, who pitched the last 5 1/3 innings for MC, took the loss.
In Game 1, Louisiana College trailed came from down 3-0 early to tie the game with a three-run the third, then lost the lead again the fourth before tying the game again in the seventh at 4-4.
The Lady Cats took one-run leads in the top of the 10th, 11th and 12th innings but were unable to keep the Lady Choctaws off the board.
MC secured the win in the bottom of the 13th with an RBI single by Catherine Brand that scored Kaitlyn Kiss on an unearned run.
Twenty-three innings of high-scoring softball yielded several big days at the plate for both teams.
Burkett went 6-for-10 with three runs scored and three RBI) while Douglas was good for a double and three RBI.
Junior
Daniele Wilson (Destrehan, La./Archbishop Chappelle) went 3-for-9 with a double, four RBI and a pair of runs scored while junior
Amanda Martin (Prairieville, La./St. Amant HS) went 6-for-11 with a run scored.
Leslie Eastham (Baton Rouge, La./Woodlawn HS) pitched all 13 innings for LC in Game 1 but fell to 4-1 on the year. Courtney Nunn (6-2) pitched a complete game for MC and registered the win.
