ALEXANDRIA, La. – The game of baseball, perhaps more so than any other, is one of statistical oddities. Saturday, Louisiana College senior left-hander
Dustin Fulks was a part of such a moment, completing a two-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over LeTourneau.
The trio of
Greg Uzee,
Cole Prejean and
Jordan Marks were a part of a standard piece of history, hurling a combined one-hitter in a 6-1 win in the third game of the series. It was the first one-hitter for the Wildcats since Corey Underwood achieved the feat in a seven-inning game in 2009.
Fulks' two-hitter and the combined one-hitter book-ended a Game 2 pitching gem from
Justin Reed and
Kory Kottenbrook that resulted in a 6-0 win.
The series sweep brought LC's overall record to 8-6 and American Southwest Conference East Division record to 3-0.
“From start to finish, that was one of the best pitching performances we've had since I came here 12 years ago,” Louisiana College coach
Mike Byrnes said. “We got a great effort from the entire team in this series but our pitchers really came through.”
On the series, which took place almost entirely on Saturday due to weather, the Wildcat pitching staff allowed just nine hits and one run while striking out a 22 combined batters and walking just five and holding the YellowJackets scoreless in 24 consecutive innings.
LeTourneau (6-12, 0-3 American Southwest Conference East) did not get a run until the ninth inning of Game 3.
“We worked hard as team during the week leading up to this series,” Uzee said. “As a staff we worked on pounding the strike zone. It all worked out. This was a huge sweep for us.”
Uzee pitched no-hit baseball for six innings of Game 3 before being spelled by Prejean, then Marks.
That Fulks (3-1) took a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings was, while stellar, trumped by the fact that he achieved his win over the course of three days and at two ballparks.
The first two innings of the first game of the LC-LeTourneau three-game American Southwest Conference East Division-opening series were played on Thursday at Louisiana College's Billy Allgood Field but was suspended after two full innings due to lightning.
On Friday, more rain forced the postponement of the game an extra day.
On Saturday, though, Fulks re-took the mound and held the YellowJackets at bay for the final five innings at Alexandria's Bringhurst Field, where the series was concluded in a tripleheader consisting of the last five innings of Thursday's game and a pair of nine-inning contests.
“I was feeling pretty good out there,” Fulks said. “I got into a groove and my teammates were with me for every out.”
Fulks, a former standout at Simpson High School in Vernon Parish, is no stranger to accomplishing the unlikely on the mound.
As a junior at Simpson, he pitched two complete games in less than 24 hours to win the Broncos a Class B state championship.
“These situations aren't mush to worry about,” Fulks said. “I have a lot of confidence in myself, and more importantly, in my teammates behind me. It's just a matter of going out and doing the job.”
Fulks finished with five strikeouts, no walks and only Chris Bertram and John Francis having reached safely from LeTourneau.
Fulks' performance was complimented perfectly by a collection of great Game 1 performances by the LC offence.
Marks, who played shortstop for LC until the ninth inning of Game 3, went 3-for-3 with two homeruns, four RBI and three runs scored.
Sophomore designated hitter
Matt Scott went 3-for-4 with a run scored and sophomore catcher
Taylor Beavers went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Ryan Whitehead took the loss for LeTourneau in Game 1.
GAME 2: LC 6, LETOURNEAU 0
The Wildcats carried their Game 1 momentum forward to claim their third consecutive series win.
LC got one run in the first inning then blew the game open with five runs in the sixth.
Reed got the win and improved to 2-1 on the year after pitching seven complete innings, walking one and striking out eight while allowing six hits.
Kottenbrook struck out three over the last two innings to bring the Wildcats' strikeout total in Game 2 to 11.
Offensively, LC was led by freshman
Cary Myers who went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Marks went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI while senior outfielder
Steven Bowman went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double.
LeTourneau's top offensive performer was left fielder Andrew Doerfield with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
Travis Norris (0-4) was the losing pitcher in Game 2.
GAME 3: LC 6, LETOURNEAU 1
Uzee struck out three and walked one while allowing no hits through six innings and Prejean and Marks pitched the final three innings to secure the combined one hitter.
Offensively, the Wildcats were led in Game 3 by Marks, who went 1-for-2 with a homerun, two RBI and three runs scored. Bowman went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
LeTourneau's only hit came from left-fielder Brent Sellers, who later scored the YellowJackets lone run on a fielder's choice putout of designated hitter Landon Methvin.
Christian Baker was the losing pitcher in Game 3.
Louisiana College returns to action Monday with a visit to cross-town rival LSU-Alexandria.
