PINEVILLE, La. – Senior Day featured a ceremony honoring the eight men who were playing their final home conference games at Louisiana College, but it was an all-classes effort as LC posted split with Texas-Tyler, the No. 4 team in the nation, in a doubleheader by the count of 4-0 and 4-6.
The split gave Texas-Tyler (31-3, 14-3 American Southwest Conference East) a half-game lead over the LC (22-11, 9-3 ASC East) by virtue of the Patriots having taken 2-of-3 from the Wildcats in this weekend's series.
On Saturday, Louisiana College shook of a 4-2 setback to Texas-Tyler on Friday night by posting a shutout win on the back of a solid pitching performance by freshman
Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS), who improved to 7-0 on the year after pitching 5 1/3 innings of shutout baseball and allowing just three hits.
Offensively, the star of both games was senior designated hitter
Chris Waguespack (Destrehan, La./St. Charles Catholic/Delgado CC), who went a combined 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, that coming off a solo home run in Game 2.
Cole Bagbey (Monroe, La./Sterlington HS) delivered the key hit in Game 1, however, a two-RBI single in the second that proved the game-winning swing.
Adam Broussard (Nederland, TX / Nederland HS/Stephen F. Austin/Baltimore City CC) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored in the first contest.
In Game 2, Waguespack went 2-for-3 and was the only multiple-hit Wildcat. Senior
Steven Davis (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish HS) and junior
Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard/LSU-Alexandria) both went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Texas-Tyler, though was two runs better in that contest, as Korey Cleveland (6-1) got the win with Parker Sheets (2) getting the save.
Davis and Waguespack were joined between games Saturday by
Cody Laprarie (Bentley, La./Grant HS/LSU-Alexandria),
Justin Lacy (Bossier City, La./Plain Dealing Acad.),
Stuart Morgan (Yazoo City, Miss./Benton Acad./Holmes CC),
Justin Reed (Kinder, La./Kinder HS),
Brandt Daigle (Alexandria, La./Alexandria Senior HS) and
Anthony Benoit (Lafayette, La./St. Michael's) for a special Senior Day ceremony.
Lacy (1-2) was the hard-luck losing pitcher in Game 2. Matt Schimpf (5-1) was the losing pitcher in Game 1.
Though Senior Day was Saturday, the Wildcats still have one home game to play in 2011, that being a non-conference single-game versus cross-town rival LSU-Alexandria Monday night at 6 p.m.
