RICHARDSON, Texas – The Wildcats went to the ballpark at Texas Dallas Thursday expecting a doubleheader. Thanks to rain, what Louisiana College got was a single, nine-inning game but one in which LC prevailed 6-2.
The win means Louisiana College (25-13, 11-5) needs to win just one of the two games that remain in the series against the Comets (23-15, 9-7), both of which are slated to be played on Friday, to lock up second place in the American Southwest Conference East Division and earn the right to host a first-round playoff series in the ASC Tournament next week.
Only a doubleheader sweep by Texas Dallas could spoil the reward of extra home baseball.
On Thursday, though, there was no joy to be had on the Comets side as the Wildcats scored three runs in the second and three in the fifth and road the arms of freshman starting pitcher
Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS) and junior reliever
Dustin Fulks (Simpson, La./Simpson HS/LSU-Eunice).
Prejean (8-1) worked six complete innings and struck out five while walking none and allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits.
Fulks, who picked up his first save of the season, pitched the final three innings, allowed no hits, issued no walks and struck out four.
The Wildcats offense scored its first three runs in unearned fashion when, in the second, a two-out error allowed nine-hole hitter
Cole Bagbey (Monroe, La./Sterlington HS) to reach safely and
Anthony Benoit (Lafayette, La./St. Michael's), who along with
Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley HS/LSU-Eunice) was already aboard, to score.
Leadoff man
Cody Laprarie (Bentley, La./Grant HS/LSU-Alexandria) then capitalized on the extra out by driving a two-RBI triple to right field.
In the fifth inning, all three Wildcat runs were earned thanks to a two-run home run by
Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard/LSU-Alexandria) and sacrifice-fly by Doughty that allowed
Chris Waguespack (Destrehan, La./St. Charles Catholic/Delgado CC) to score from third.
Marks, Waguespack and Benoit went 2-for-4 apiece to lead the LC offense.
Derek Dallas (8-1) took the loss for Texas Dalla, which was lead offensively by a 2-for-4 performance by Grant Friddell.
