LONGVIEW, Texas – The Louisiana College baseball team split a doubleheader with LeTourneau, 2-4 and 5-1, but still lost out on the chance to become the 2011 American Southwest Conference East Division champions.
By virtue of LC (24-13, 10-5 ASC East) losing 2-of-3 to the Yellow Jackets this weekend and Texas-Tyler (31-4, 14-4 ASC East) taking 2-of-3 from Mississippi College in the conference closer for UTT, the race for first in the ASC East is done, though LC is still very much alive in the hunt for the 2011 postseason.
Louisiana College and Texas Dallas are currently locked in a battle for second place in the ASC East, the winner of which will host a first-round series in the ASC Tournament.
LC and the Comets meet to decide second in a three-game series beginning next Friday evening in Richardson, Texas.
On Saturday, the Wildcats struggled to find offense in Game 1, producing just three hits and falling 4-2 to LeTourneau (18-19, 6-9 ASC East).
The LC defense was in high gear, though and the pitching combination of
Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS),
Justin Lacy (Bossier City, La./Plain Dealing Acad.) and
Madison Lachney (Iowa, La./Iowa HS) combined to allow just four hits.
Prejean (7-1), a contender for Freshman of the Year in the ASC East, suffered his first loss as a college pitcher despite allowing just three hits and striking out four in 3 2/3 innings.
Garrett Methvin (5-3) picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets, going six innings and striking out 13. THe save went to Jordan Price (1).
Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley HS/LSU-Eunice) was the only multiple-hit player for LC in the first contest and went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Travis Self was the top batter for LeTourneau, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
In the second game, both teams' bats came alive but it was the LC defense, which found a way to work around 12 Yellow Jacket hits, that proved the hero of the day in a 5-1 win.
Senior righty
Justin Reed (Kinder, La./Kinder HS), who had suffered a string of no-decisions this year, earned his first win in the game and improved to 1-0 on the year after pitching seven innings and striking out four while walking none scattering 10 hits.
Travis Norris (2-4) took the loss after pitching 5 2/3 innings and striking out two while allowing six hits and walking six.
Freshman designated hitter
Matt Scott (Pineville, La./Pineville HS) was the top offensive performer of the second contest with a 3-for-5, three-RBI performance.
Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard HS/LSU-Alexandria) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
