Yet another freshman, James Beavers (Georgetown, La./Tioga HS), played the role of hero in the final of a three-game series.

Beavers, the Wildcats' third catcher, struck a perfect opposite-field single to right to give LC the win and improve the home team's overall record to 18-8 overall and 5-1 in ASC East play.

Appropriately, the pitcher of record at the end of the game was another freshman, Madison Lachney (Iowa, La./Iowa HS), who improved to earned his first collegiate win after pitching a three-up, three-down side with two strikeouts in the top of the 10th.

Chad Cox (1-4) took the loss for East Texas Baptist, which fell to 8-17 overall and 3-6 in ASC East play.

In Game 1, LC put up nine runs on 14 hits. In Game 2, it was six runs on 13 hits.

Virtually every player who made a plate appearance for the Wildcats experienced at least one positive outcome on Saturday, but some stood out above the rest.

Benoit went 4-for-8 with five RBI (all of which were driven home in Game 1) while Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley HS/LSU-Eunice) went 4-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored on the day.

The LC pitching staff also had its superlatives.

In Game 2, senior Justin Reed (Kinder, La./Kinder HS) got a no-decision, but pitched admirably, working the first six innings and striking out four while limiting the Tigers to just three runs on eight hits.

Pete Fitzsimmons (3-4) was the losing pitcher in Game 1.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday when they host LSU-Shreveport in the annual DARE Game at Bringhurst Field in Alexandria. First pitch for that game will be thrown at 11 a.m.
