ALEXANDRIA, La. – A week off did nothing to hurt the Louisiana College bats. The Wildcats, who last saw action a week ago versus LeTourneau, had an offensive explosion Monday night and defeated cross-town rival LSU-Alexandria 12-8.
In a game in which a combined 20 runs and 32 hits occurred, LC (15-8) accounted for a dozen runs on 19 hits, all of which were needed as the Generals (4-20) were in full swing as well, particularly early and never were very far out of reach of the lead.
LSU-A took a 5-0 lead on seven hits, among them two home runs (one apiece by Chase Barrett and Tid Hilger) and two doubles in the first inning.
LC was able to take the lead in the second with an RBI single by
Cole Bagbey (Monroe, La./Sterlington HS) and a two-RBI single by
Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard/LSU-Alexandria), a two-RBI single by
Anthony Benoit (Lafayette, La./St. Michael's) and an RBI double by
Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley HS/LSU-Eunice)
By the end of the side, the Wildcats had amassed six runs, all unearned thanks to an early error by LSU-A pitcher Jake Bell, on four hits.
LC added a run in the top of the fourth when senior
Steven Davis (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish HS) connected on a solo home run.
LSU-Alexandria answered in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run on an RBI single by Hilger but Benoit placed an RBI single into center field in the sixth to reestablish the LC advantage.
Doughty followed with an RBI single of his own to push the Wildcats' lead to 9-6.
Another RBI by Hilger brought the Generals to within 9-7 of the lead in the sixth but an RBI single by Davis sent
Cody Laprarie (Bentley, La./Grant HS/LSU-Alexandria), who has reached base on the latter of back-to-back double, and an RBI singles by Benoit and Doughty sufficed to give LC a 12-7 lead in the top of the seventh.
It was the lead that finally proved too steep for the Generals to overcome.
Dustin Fulks (Simpson, La./Simpson HS/LSU-Eunice) got the win and improved to 1-2 on the season after a spectacular showing out of the LC bullpen, striking out six in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Jake Bell took the loss for LSU-Alexandria.
While the LC offense was not short on stars, some players were simply incredible.
Benoit went 5-for-6 with a runs cored and four RBI. Davis went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Doughty went 4-for-6 with three RBI. Marks went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of runs driven in.
LC returns to action this weekend with an American Southwest Conference East home series against East Texas Baptist. Game 1 of that three-game affair will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday.
