PINEVILLE, La. – It was perhaps the best start to American Southwest Conference East Division play the Wildcats could have hoped for. Louisiana College followed their come-from-behind win over Mississippi College on Friday night with a dramatic, 5-4 win in the first half of a doubleheader on Saturday. And, although LC fell 9-3 to the Choctaws in Saturday's series finale, the Wildcats still managed to log a series win over an MC team to which they had suffered a sweep in 2010.
In Game 1 of the doubleheader, the second contest of the three-game series, the Wildcats (13-7, 2-1 ASC East) logged a dramatic, come-from-behind, walk-off win thanks to the late-game heroics of senior
Cody Laprarie (Bentley, La./Grant HS/LSU-Alexandria) and sophomore
Cole Bagbey (Monroe, La./Sterlington HS), both outfielders.
With LC down to its last out and trailing 4-3 in the final inning of a seven-inning contests, Bagbey delivered a two-strike, game-tying RBI single to right field that sent
Chaston LaCaze (Pineville, La./Grace Christian) home.
LaCaze was pinch running for catcher
Chris Waguespack (Destrehan, La./St. Charles Catholic/Delgado CC), who had reached base with a one-out single.
Laprarie, who was also down to his final strike, followed with a game-winning, walk-off RBI single to left-centerfield that allowed
Adam Broussard (Nederland, TX / Nederland HS/Stephen F. Austin/Baltimore City CC), who had gotten on base via a hit-by-pitch, to score from third.
For the second time in as many games, freshman
Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS) earned the win pitching in relief and improved his record to a team-best 4-0.
Terrell Prescott (0-2) pitched a complete game but took the loss for Mississippi College.
The Choctaws (8-8, 1-2 ASC East) took an early lead when Chad Wooten scored an unearned run on a wild pitch in the third.
The Wildcats would tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by
Anthony Benoit (Lafayette, La./St. Michael's) that plated
Steven Davis (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish HS), who had reached base on a walk and been moved to third on a single by
Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard/LSU-Alexandria).
Mississippi College wasn't done offensively, though, and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on a two-out, two-RBI double by Spencer Brunson.
Before the end of the fifth, the Choctaws had increased that lead to 4-1 thanks to an RBI single by Brandon Benton.
LC dug into that lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI single by Marks before taking the walk-off win in the seventh.
In the second half of Saturday's doubleheader, MC scored nine runs on 16 hits and got a win for Scott Trousdale (2-1), who struck out five Wildcats.
LC scored three runs on 10 hits with
Dustin Fulks (Simpson, La./Simpson HS/LSU-Eunice) taking the loss and falling to 0-2 on the year.
LC returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. with a non-conference contest against LeTourneau.
