PINEVILLE, La. - The Louisiana College baseball team took two wildly different paths to wins in its season-opening sweep of Texas College. In a doubleheader that was delayed several days due to icy conditions in Central Louisiana, LC (2-0) posted a 3-2 extra-inning win and 14-5 landslide victory over the Steers (1-4) on a perfect opening day.
In the opening contest, the Wildcats fought off some first-game kinks and rallied to win in the bottom of the 10th inning when senior
Cody Laprarie (Bentley, La./Grant HS/LSU-Alexandria) scored from third on a sacrifice fly by catcher
Anthony Benoit (Lafayette, La./St. Michael's).
With the game having been slated for a seven-inning regulation, the Wildcats trailed 2-1 heading into the final inning of the game but rallied to score the tying run on their last out on an RBI single by senior shortstop
Steven Davis (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish HS) that plated left fielder
Adam Broussard (Nederland, Texas/Nederland HS).
Senior
Justin Lacy (Bossier City, La./Plain Dealing Academy), pitching in relief of starter
Dustin Fulks (Simpson, La./Simpson HS/LSU-Eunice), a lefty and junior-college transfer who struck out nine batters in 5 1/3 innings of work in his LC debut, picked up the win while Jared Duncan took the loss for Texas College.
Sophomore right fielder
Cole Bagbey (Monroe, La./Sterlington HS) was the top offensive performer for LC, going 2-for-3 and scoring the Wildcats' first run of the season in the third inning on an RBI single by
Jordan Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard/LSU-Alexandria).
In the second game, it was all Wildcats as LC rode huge efforts in the third and fourth innings to victory.
LC sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored eight runs on nine hits then followed with six runs on six hits in the fourth inning, one in which 11 Wildcats visited home plate.
That was more than enough to set up the win, one registered by freshman
Cole Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS), who was pitching in relief of starter Korey Kottenbrook (Springhill, La./Springhill HS).
Bagbey was again a star, this time going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Joining the fun in Game 2 were Davis (2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI), Broussard (2-for-2 with three runs scored) and Laprarie (two RBI).
Senior third baseman Brandy Daigle (Alexandria, La./Alexandria Senior HS) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and another driven in while sophomore first baseman
Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley HS/LSU-Eunice) went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
