Lady Cats fall in ASC Title game

BROWNWOOD, Texas - If fans of Louisiana College basketball can't make it to West Central Texas for this weekend's American Southwest Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament, they can still follow the Lady Cats every step of the way on this page.

Howard Payne, the host school for this year's tournament, has set up a Tournament Central page  and will offer live stats and video of each game.

LC will play in the first game of the tournament, taking on Mary Hardin-Baylor at noon on Friday.

BOWNWOOD, Texas – The Lady Cats faced a tough Mary Hardin-Baylor defense but still pulled out a 64-54 opening-round win over the Cru in the American Southwest Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament here Friday afternoon.

LC held a 28-22 lead at the half and outscored UMHB 36-32 in the second half to secure the win and setup a semifinal showdown with the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls, who defeated Mississippi College 77-71 in the quarterfinals.

The semifinal contest will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Lady Cats (23-2) had three players reach double figures on offense, most notably junior guard Roslyn Wilmer (Marksville, La./Marksville HS) who scored a game-high 17 points to go along with four steals, three assists and a block.

Senior Tillisha Givens (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish HS) was one rebound shy of a double-double and scored 15 points while senior guard/forward Kayla Guidry (Alexandria, La./Peabody /UTEP) scored 16.

Mary Hardin-Baylor had just one player reach double figures on the day, Lindsay Eaton with 13 points.

The Cru defense forced some tough shots by LC and the Lady Cats shot 35 percent from the field and just 15 percent from three-point range on the day.

Louisiana College, however, countered with a strong defensive effort of its own and forced Mary Hardin-Baylor in to 27 turnovers, 18 via the steal, which resulted in 26 points off of turnovers by the Lady Cats.

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Louisiana College women's basketball team secured its second straight berth in the American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship game by virtue of a 70-62 win over Hardin-Simmons.

LC (24-2) actually trailed 28-27 at the half, but outscored the Cowgirls (20-7) 43-34 in the second half to lock up the win.

For the second time in as many games, LC junior guard Roslyn Wilmer (Marksville, La./Marksville HS) was the top scorer for the Lady Cats, putting up a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Four other LC women joined Wilmer in double-figure scoring with senior forward Tillisha Givens (Monroe, La./Ouachita HS) scoring 11 points and pulling down nine rebounds, Kayla Guidry (Alexandria, La./Peabody/UTEP) scoring 13, Shasidy Ludgood (Inglewood, Cal./Tusculum Univ.) 12 and Natosha Gottliev (Alexandria, La./Bolton HS) 11.

Hardin-Simmons had five players reach double figures as well with Lindsey Newcombe putting up a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double to lead the way. Coco Cartwright scored 14, Alexis Poplar 10, Jasmine Lewis 11 and Whitney Enis 12.

LC will face the winner of this evening's Texas Dallas-Howard Payne showdown in the title game. Last year LC defeated McMurry in overtime to win its first ASC Crown.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Howard Payne 83, LC 69

BROWNWOOD, Texas - A repeat as American Southwest Conference Tournament champions simply wasn't in the cards for the Louisiana College women. LC suffered it's worst loss of the season, falling to hos team Howard Payne 83-69 in the title game Sunday afternoon.

Louisiana College (23-3) stuggled on offense all afternoon, shooting just 32 percent from the field (21-of-65) and 26 percent from three-point range (6-for-23).

Howard Payne (21-7), meanwhile, shot 57 percent from the field (29-of-51) and 41 percent from beyond the three-point line (12-of-29).

Four Howard Payne women scored in double figures: Brittany Roberson (18), Clarissa Krum (15), Tiffany Warner (12)  and Jasmin Thomas (11).

LC was led offensively by Roslyn Wilmer with 22 points with Tillisha Givens adding 20 and Natosha Gottlieb 11 on the game.

Louisiana College's women, currently ranked No. 13 in the D3Hoops.com poll and No. 17  in the USA Today ESPN poll, did not receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III national tournament, but is still among the favorites to receive and at-large bid.

The official announcement regarding the Lady Cats' fate will be made at 2 p.m. Monday when the NCAA holds its Division III selection show.
