PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College baseball team continued its hot start here Saturday afternoon, downing McKendree 8-4 and 5-3 to win the teams' four-game series 3-1 and improve its overall record to 6-1 on the year.
While both games came down to a save situation, the fireworks were actually in the series finale, in which LC came from behind in its last two at-bats to claim a 5-3 victory.
The Wildcats, who surrendered three unearned runs were able to tie the game with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by
Anthony Benoit (Lafayette, La./St. Michael's).
Senior relief pitcher
Stuart Morgan (Yazoo City, Miss./Holmes CC) entered the game in the sixth and retired the side, three-up and three-down before LC took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles by
Cody Laprarie (Bentley, La./LSU-Alexandria) and
Steven Davis (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish HS).
Senior
Jordan Meisner (Baton Rouge, La./Tara HS) retired the Bearcats in the top of the seventh inning to log his first save and give Morgan the victory, the final out of the game being recorded when Laprarie made a diving catch on a line-drive shot by McKendree's Ronnie Calvird.
Eric Gentz, pitching in relief of Josh Rathmann, took the loss in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Wildcats earned an 8-4 win after they got a marvelous outing from 6-foot-6 senior right-hander
Greg Uzee (Gretna, La./Archbishop Shaw), who made his second start of the season after having missed the 2010 season with a shoulder injury.
After pitching three innings in a start versus LSU-Alexandria last Tuesday, Uzee earned the win in the seven-inning game after pitching four complete innings and striking out eight while walking three and allowing three hits with just one earned run.
Freshman
Madison Lachney (Iowa, La./Iowa HS) picked up the three-inning save in just his second collegiate appearance pitching in relief of Uzee. He struck out two while walking none and allowing four hits and one earned run.
The offensive story of the day was told in the bottom of the third for LC, when the Wildcats batted 12 and scored six runs on six hits.
Redshirt sophomore and left fielder
Adam Broussard (Nederland, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day for LC and had one RBI.
Laprarie, Benoit and third baseman
Brandt Daigle (Alexandria, La./Alexandria Senior HS) all had solid showings at the plate in the first contest, each going 2-for-4.
Laprarie scored two runs and batted in another while Benoit had two RBI and two runs scored and Daigle one run scored and one RBI.
Alex Young (0-1) took the Game 1 loss.
LC returns to action Thursday at 1 p.m. with a visit to Centenary in Shreveport for a doubleheader.
