PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College women weren't just good Thursday night, they were historically good. In the course of defeating American Southwest Conference opponent LeTourneau 4-2, the Lady Cats managed to post their first win in Wildcat Stadium and most goals in a game since 2007.

This win came on the heels of a 1-0 road win against Schreiner and an overtime loss to Texas Lutheran making the last three matches the best stretch LC women's soccer has experienced since 2007. The year in which the Lady Cats went 7-12, the best season in school history.

Prior to Thursday, the Lady Cats had been winless in the three-year-old Wildcat Stadium and hadn't won a home match since 2008, when the soccer team was relocated to the Johnny Downs Complex in Alexandria while Wildcat Stadium was being constructed.

“I talked to the girls all this week about how important it was to to play to our full potential in our home stadium,” second-year coach Bruce Deaton said. “The people who have supported us through this process of rebuilding deserved to see us play like this and to get a win.”

The four goals scored by LC Thursday night were the most since a 5-0 win over Central Baptist on Aug. 31, 2007.

The Lady Cats struck quickly in the match scoring twice in the first seven minutes of the match.

Freshman Sara Smith scored both goals, the first on an assist by Iris Tuttle in the third minute and the second an unassisted goal in the seventh.

LeTourneau would eventually tie the game on goals by Elise Athans in the 53rd minute and Kali Behrens in the 54th but a goal by LC's Anna Champagne off an assist by Smith in the 58th minute restored the lead the Lady Cats.

Taylor Devillier scored an insurance goal in the 70th minute off an assist by Erin Biggs and the LC defense, paced by a nine-save performance by Emily Breaux, handled the rest.

“This is three games in a row that we've been able to put it all together,” Deaton said. “I was a little concerned when we gave up two goals, but what I was most proud of was that we dug in deep and overcame it to get the win.”

Post game, Deaton had high praise for his entire team, particularly Smith, who with four goals on the season has the most by one player since 2007.

“It was a great performance by Sara,” Deaton said. “She played a great game, they all did. Even through a few bumps in the match our intensity and quality of play was always high.”

The Lady Cats will wrap their home schedule Friday at 5 p.m. but fans are encouraged to come to the stadium early. Stepanie Baer, Elizabeth Chappell and Anna Wynne will all be honored prior to the match as part of Senior Night festivities.
