PINEVILLE – The No. 1-ranked Lady Wildcats were nearly flawless on the first day of back-to-back doubleheaders against American Southwest Conference East opponent the University of the Ozarks. The Louisiana College bats, pitching and defense were all in high gear as LC defeated Ozarks by a combined 20-0, 14-0 in game one and 6-0 in game two, to improve to 27-1 overall and 11-1 in ASC East play.
Junior pitcher Kelly Williams (4-1) was the star on defense, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning of game two and finishing with a four-strikeout, two-walk one-hitter.
On offense, it was senior outfielder Jodi Montagnino's day to shine. The Baton Rouge native went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and seven RBI in game 1 and scored a run in game 2.
The highlight of the day for the Lady Wildcats' three-hole hitter came in the second inning of game one when Montagnino connected on a grand slam, her eighth homer of the year.
Runs were not hard to come by in the first contest, one LC won in just five innings thanks to the mercy rule.
Louisiana College scored three runs in the first, six in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth.
Leadoff batter Brittany Menard went 3-for-3 with four runs scored while Ashleigh Clement went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and Allison Frye 1-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
Junior Rene' Schwartzenburg (17-0) earned the win in the first game pitching three innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
In game two, the LC offense was stymied briefly by Ozarks pitcher Kelsey Mefford but the mighty Lady Wildcats eventually got the best of the visiting ace.
First baseman Leslie Eastham, playing in place of injured senior Aimee Dubroc, went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI and blasted a home run in the sixth, her second of the year.
Other top batters in game two included Menard (1-for-3, one run scored, one RBI), Mary Alice Roy (1-for-3, one RBI), Devan Greene (1-for-3, run scored) and Frye (1-for-3, run scored).
LC will have little time to celebrate the big win. The top-ranked team in American has to play a second doubleheader versus Ozarks Friday at 1 p.m.
