Wildcat baseball splits doubleheader with McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University and Louisiana College split a twinbill Friday in an American Southwest Conference crossover series at Walt Driggers Field. Kory Moench hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning of game one to give McMurry a 6-4 win before Louisiana College took game two 5-3.

In the first game, McMurry led 3-0 before the Wildcats posted four runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Chris Waguespack hit a two-run single and Steven Bowmand and Jon Michael Kidd each drove in runs to
help the Wildcats take the lead.

However, in the fifth, Derek Saltzgaber drove home a run with a double to knot the score at 4-4. The game went into extra innings when neither team could score until the bottom of the eighth when Mench hit a 1-2 pitch over the leftfield wall to drive home two and McMurry won 6-4.

Chris Semchenko picked up the win in relief for McMurry throwing 3.2 innings and allowing just one hit, no runs and no walks to move to 1-0 on the season. Josh Foster was charged with the loss for LC after
surrendering the home run after 2.2 innings of work.

In the second game, the Wildcats jumped out early with a 3-0 lead thanks to three-straight hits by Cody Laprarie, Steven Bowman and Mike Doughty. All three Wildcats came around to score.

Then, in the bottom of the second, Saltzgaber hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, that cut the lead to one before Michael Dibiasi's run-scoring single tied the score at three.

However, from there, LC picked up a run in the fifth and sixth innings while McMurry managed just two hits in the final five innings.

Walt McGee hit the game-winning sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Cole Bishop and Anthony Benoit singled home Ryan Lavergne for an insurance run in the sixth. Steven Jones picked up the win in relief
to move to 2-0 on the season. The submariner allowed just one hit and struck out one in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Chris Maldanado picked up the loss for McMurry to fall to 0-1 on the season.

The two teams will settle the series with a rubber match Saturday with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. McMurry moved to 5-8 with the split while the Wildcats went to 4-7.
