MARSHALL, Texas – heading into his Wildcats' weekend road series against American Southwest Conference East Division Rival East Texas Baptist, Louisiana College baseball coach
Mike Byrnes said he expected three barn-burners. In a doubleheader Saturday, Byrnes' team did not disappoint, winning back-to-back shootouts over ETBU 10-6 and 18-14.
In the process, the Wildcats, who had previously been 0-4 in ASC East play, got themselves back in the postseason discussion by virtue of their 9-15 overall mark and 2-4 conference record.
Game one, which would have normally been viewed as a track meet save the combined 32-run performance by the teams in game two, was LC's from the start.
The Wildcats, paced by junior catcher Chris Waguespack, who hit back-to-back home runs in the second and third innings, scored five runs in the first three innings and three in the last two and committed just one error to down the Tigers.
Freshman lefty Anthony VanGessel picked up the win going six innings with four strikeouts and five earned runs with two walks and eight hits allowed.
Waguespack finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
He was not, however, the only Wildcat to go yard in the first contest.
Senior outfielder Jon Michael Kidd hit a solo shot in the sixth inning as part of a 1-for-3 performance while senior first baseman Corey Jones went deep in the sixth with a two-run shot, part of a 2-for-4 performance.
Junior centerfielder and leadoff batter Cody Laprarie went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Steven Bowman went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and Jonathan Ettinger 1-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
In game two, neither team had trouble scoring runs or running pitchers from the game.
The teams employed the use of a combined 10 pitcher (four for LC, six for ETBU).
LC scored its 18 runs on 20 hits while committing one error while ETBU put up 14 runs on 16 hits with two errors.
The Wildcats were meticulous with their offense, scoring at least one run in every inning save the fourth but never scoring more than three in an inning, while ETBU got its offense in spurts scoring six in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, four in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Laprarie had a marvelous performance in game two, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five driven in.
Kidd went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, both coming on a two-run homerun in the eighth.
Bowman went 2-for-6 with three RBI, Ettinger 2-for-6 with three RBI, Jones 2-for-6 with two runs scored, Walt McGee 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Chris Magee 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Relief pitcher Grant Cox (2-0) picked up the win for LC.
Next up for the Wildcats will be a non-conference home game against LSU-Alexandria Tuesday at 6 p.m. followed by a three-game home series against the University of the Ozarks Thursday and Friday
