CLINTON, Miss. – Louisiana College put up back-to-back valiant fights against No. 21 Mississippi College in a Saturday doubleheader but were unable to best the Choctaws in either contest, falling 3-0 and 7-6 and succumbing to a sweep in their first American Southwest Conference East Division series of 2010.

In game one, LC (6-12, 0-3 ASC) got a great showing from freshman lefty Anthony VanGessel, who allowed just four hits and struck out three while issuing no walks and hitting two batters.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats offense also managed just four hits and never got a run across home plate meaning that VanGessel took the loss.

The good news for Louisiana College, which had just two hits in the series opener Friday night, was that four players – Cole Bishop, Anthony Benoit, Mike Doughty and Steven Bowman – all hit safely in game one.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Wildcat offense came to life and scored six runs on eight hits to take a 6-3 lead into the sixth, an advantage they could not maintain.

Hunter King took the loss for LC.

Once again, though, there was a bright lining on a disappointing game as more Wildcats seemed to find their offensive groove.

Ryan Lavergne went 1-for-3 and scored two runs in the contest while Benoit added two RBI and Brandt Daigle one RBI.

The Wildcats return to action at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning with the annual DARE Game at Bringhurst Field in Alexandria. As per tradition, LC will take on LSU-Shreveport in that contest.
