SHREVEPORT - The Louisiana College pitchers allowed just two earned runs and five of the 10 batters who stepped to the plate for the Wildcats hit safely, but one bad inning and four costly errors doomed the LC baseball team to a 5-4 loss to the LSU-Shreveport Pilots Wednesday night.
In a game that was rescheduled from Tuesday to Wednesday due to the threat of snow, the Wildcats had one bat inning, the fifth, and could never quite recover.
In the bottom of the fifth, having just tied the score a 1-1 in the top side, the Wildcats gave up three unearned runs and one earned to fall behind 5-1.
The Cats bounced back to post three runs in the sixth tnaks to a two-RBI double by catcher Anthony Benoit and a run scored on a wild pitch by Cody Laprarie, but a win was not in the cards.
The Pilots' bull pen was able to stymie the WiIdcats in the last three innings of the game.
And while LSU-S starter Cole Newell earned the win, it was closer Corey Theriot and the Pilot defense that proved the heroes of the game for the Pilots as they combined to overcome a potential game-changing situation when the Wildcats got the potential game-tying run to third in the form of Jonathan Ettinger with just one out and runner on the corner.
Lady Luck di not shine on LC though, as LSU-S second baseman Stephen Hobbins snagged a well-struck line-drive off the bat of Steven Davis and doubled up Cole Bishop at first to end the game and drop LC to 2-4 on the season (LSU-S improved to 8-4).
Hunter King (0-1) took the loss for the Wildcats, who were led offensively by Laprarie (2-for-4 with a run scored), Mike Doughty (1-for-2 with a run scored) and Benoit (1-for-3 with two RBI).
LC returns to action Friday and Saturday with a three-game series against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
