PINEVILLE, La. -- The Louisiana College Wildcats suffered their first defeat of this young season, falling 12-4 to the Rhodes College Lynx on Saturday night.
It was a dream start for the Wildcats in the first inning. Cody Laprairie and Steven Bowman each got on board with a single before third baseman Walt McGee belted a 3-1 fastball over the left-field wall for his first career homerun, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead.
Wildcats starting pitcher Dustin Tubre looked confident in his pitching in the early innings, recording six strikeouts in the first three frames. In the fifth, Tubre allowed the first two Rhodes batters to reach and was removed in favor of Josh Foster, who would pitch a rocky four and one-third innings.
Not helped by two errors, LC gave up four runs in the fifth inning to fall behind, and would never reclaim the lead. The Lynx added two more runs in the sixth, and the Wildcats continued to trail, despite adding
an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.
Rhodes College piled it on in the ninth inning, batting around and scoring six runs on seven hits and two walks.
Right-fielder Brent Lindsey had three RBIs for the visitors and third baseman Kyle Peterson had three hits and scored three runs.
Tubre, Foster, and
Stuart Morgan struck out 15 Lynx batters, while Austin Carden and Hunter Chandler combined for 14 strikeouts for Rhodes College. Carden pitched five innings, allowing only the three
runs on McGee's homer and earned the victory. Foster took the loss after allowing ten runs, eight of them earned.
Steven Bowman had three hits for Louisiana College, and catcher Anthony Benoit went 2-4 with a run scored as LC's record fell to 2-1.
The Cats will close out the weekend with a double-header against Rhodes on Sunday.
