PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University softball team rolled to a pair of run-rule wins to take the series over Texas College, defeating the Steers 15-2 and 12-3 with both games ending in five innings Friday afternoon at Wildcat Park.
Game 1 – Louisiana Christian 15, Texas College 2 (5 innings)
After getting Texas College (3-16, 3-16 RRAC) in order in the top of the first Louisiana Christian (20-18, 10-10 RRAC) got things started in the bottom of the frame.
Mariel Medrano shot a base hit up the middle to reach safely. She stole second and came all the way home as
Maci Baldwin's sacrifice bunt was thrown away by the Steers defense.
Errors helped the Wildcats extend the lead further in the inning.
Cecilia Bookman reached on a dropped line drive and came home as
Lexi Broussard doubled and the throw in went wild for a 2-0 LCU lead after one.
More miscues helped the Wildcats blow the score open in the second inning.
Naya Soto reached on an error, moved to second on
Madelyn Bourgoyne's base hit, went to third when
Kate Daigle was hit by a pitch, and scored on Medrano's base on balls.
Bourgoyne scored on Baldwin's base hit which fell just on the fair side of the right field line.
Isabella Battaglia's ground ball to second base was thrown away, allowing both Daigle and Medrano to score. Bookman's fly ball to center was deep enough to let Baldwin tag up and score for a 7-0 LCU lead after just two innings.
Another five-spot in the third made the result inevitable. Baldwin's base hit to third scored Daigle from third. Battaglia dropped a base hit in right to score Medrano. Bookman found the right-center gap and raced for a triple which scored both Baldwin and Battaglia. Broussard followed with a triple of her own, scoring Bookman for a 12-0 Wildcat lead through three.
The Steers got their first base runner and first hits of the game in the fourth inning, also scoring twice to get on the board. However, Texas College's momentum was short lived as LCU responded with three in the bottom of the inning.
Kiersten Bradshaw's base hit through the right side scored both
Ashlyn Ogden and Bourgoyne. Daigle, who reentered the game to run after Bradshaw hit for her, was allowed to tag up and score from third on Caydence Lobdell's sacrifice fly to center for the game's final run.
Four Wildcats got multiple hits in the day's first game. Medrano went 2-for-2 with a walk, stole two bases, scored three times, and drove in a run.
Baldwin was 2-for-2 with a walk, stole a base, scored twice, and knocked in a pair of runs.
Broussard was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and scored once.
Bourgoyne went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Daigle was 1-for-1 and was hit by a pitch, stole two bases, and scored three times.
Bookman was 1-for-2 with a triple, knocked in three runs, and scored twice.
Battaglia was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Katelyn Carpenter (2-3) threw the first four innings in the circle to pick up the win, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Clare Gauthreaux threw the final inning, allowing just one hit but getting the other three batters she faced out without allowing a run, striking out one.
Game 2 – Louisiana Christian 12, Texas College 3
The Wildcats had to fight from behind in the nightcap as Texas College pushed one across in the top of the first inning. But it didn't take long for LCU to get in front in the bottom of the first. With one out, Baldwin dropped a base hit into left-center. She stole second and came home on Broussard's double down the left field line.
Broussard stole third and came home on Battaglia's hit to center, giving LCU the lead for good in game two.
Christina Curtis then shot a base hit up the middle which rolled all the way to the wall in right-center, scoring Battaglia all the way from first for a 3-1 lead when the inning ended.
LCU started pulling away in the third inning. Medrano led off the inning by drawing a walk, stole both second and third bases, and came home on Baldwin's double to left.
Baldwin stole third and touched the plate on Battaglia's base hit through the left side of the infield.
Daigle, running for Battaglia, stole second and moved to error as the throw from the catcher got to the outfield. She scored on Curtis's fly ball to left which was deep enough to let her tag up and come home.
Kaitlyn Van Haverbeke kept the rally going with a base hit through the left side of the infield. She took second on a passed ball and scored as
Emily Marks shot a base hit back up the middle for a 7-1 LCU lead through three complete.
Texas College picked up a couple of runs in the top of the fourth, but that couldn't stop the inevitable run-rule as the Wildcats put up a five-spot in the bottom of the frame.
Medrano beat out a ground ball to third base to lead off the inning. She stole second, moved to third as Baldwin bunted for a base hit. Baldwin then stole second, setting up Broussard who found the left-center gap for a double which scored both runners while she moved to third as the throw went home.
Battaglia hit a ground ball to third, which scored Broussard, while a bad throw allowed Battaglia to reach safely. She moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Curtis's fly ball to center which was dropped, allowing Curtis to get to second base.
Curtis took third on a ground ball to third by Marks and came home on Bourgoyne's double down the left field line for the 12-3 score.
Baldwin was 3-for-3 with a double, stole three bases, drove in a run and scored three times.
Brousard was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a stolen base, three RBI, and two runs scored.
Battaglia was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and two runs scored while Daigle, who ran for her once, stole a base and scored once.
Bourgoyne was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
Curtis was 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI.
Addison Greak (4-4) started the contest and threw four innings, allowing five hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and one walk.
Samantha Hill finished the final inning, giving up a hit and a walk but not allowing a run and striking out one.
The Wildcats look to finish the series sweep of Texas College on Saturday as the two teams meet for one last contest. First pitch of the series finale against the Steers is set for 11 a.m. at Wildcat Park.
