PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University softball team put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning and rolled to a 15-1 win over Texas College in five innings to complete the series sweep of the Steers Saturday at Wildcat Park.
Louisiana Christian (21-18, 11-10 RRAC) got Texas College (3-18, 3-17 RRAC) in order in the top of the first and immediately pulled away in the bottom half of the inning.
Mariel Medrano opened the frame by drawing a walk. She stole second and moved to third on a pitch in the dirt before coming home on
Maci Baldwin's infield single.
Baldwin also stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before
Isabella Battaglia's ground ball to third allowed her to come home and make it 2-0 Wildcats.
With two outs and the bases empty, the Wildcats were far from done in the bottom of the first.
Christina Curtis started the rally with a double down the left field line.
Naya Soto's single back up the middle scored Curtis from second.
Madelyn Bourgoyne then went to deep left for a double and Soto raced all the way around from first for another run.
Myah Talbert's fly ball to left was dropped, allowing Bourgoyne to score. After a wild pitch allowed Talbert to move to third,
Kate Daigle brought her home with a base hit to left and a 6-0 LCU lead after one inning of play.
With no runs coming across in the second inning, Texas College got its one run in the game in the top of the third as the Steers got their first three hits of the contest and took advantage of a LCU error in the frame.
But the Wildcats answered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, scoring six more runs. Bourgoyne led off with a base hit to left, stole second, and came home on Daigle's one out single back up the middle. After taking second on the throw trying to get Bourgoyne out at the plate, Daigle moved to third on Medrano's ground ball back to the pitcher, setting up another big two-out rally.
With two away, Baldwin drew a walk and stole second.
Lexi Broussard brought both Daigle and Baldwin home as she smashed a hit off the wall down the left field line for a two-RBI triple. Battaglia got Broussard home with a shot back up the middle.
Emily Marks, now running for Battaglia, stole second and took third as the throw down ended up in the outfield. Curtis then reached safely as the TC third baseman couldn't handle her ground ball. After Curtis took second base without a challenge, Soto shot a base hit back up the middle which scored Marks while a bad throw by the Steer shortstop also allowed Curtis to come home as well, making it 12-1 Wildcats after three.
After getting the Steers in order in the fourth, LCU added the game's final three runs in the bottom of the frame. Talbert led off with a base hit to left and then Medrano went back up the middle for a single which moved Talbert to second. With
Sydney Viallon taking Talbert's place on second base, a double steal put both Viallon and Medrano in scoring position. Baldwin made the situation more promising by drawing a walk to load the bases with one out.
Broussard added to the LCU lead as her fly ball to left-center allowed both Viallon and Medrano to tag up and advance with Viallon coming in to score. After Baldwin was allowed to move up to second uncontested, Battaglia pushed a base hit through the left side of the infield to score Medrano and move Baldwin to third. Baldwin then came home as Curtis knocked a base hit off the Texas College pitcher for the game's final run.
All nine batters in the LCU line-up got a hit with six getting more than one in Saturday's contest, led by Curtis who went 3-for-4 with a double, a RBI, and two runs scored.
Medrano was 2-for-3 with a walk, stole two bases, and scored twice.
Battaglia was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Marks, serving as her pinch runner, scored once.
Soto went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored once.
Bourgoyne was 2-for-3 with a double, stole a base, knocked in a run, and scored twice.
Daigle was also 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Baldwin was 1-for-2, drew a pair of walks, stole two bases, knocked in a run, and scored three times.
Broussard was 1-for-3 with a triple, brought home three runs, and scored once.
Olivia Falcon (9-6) went the distance in the circle for the Wildcats, throwing all five innings to get the win. She allowed four hits and one run, which was earned, with six strikeouts and one walk.
The Wildcats close out the home portion of the 2026 schedule next weekend as Texas A&M-Victoria comes to Pineville for a three-game Red River Athletic Conference set on senior weekend at LCU. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader against the Jaguars (22-14, 13-8 RRAC) is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Park.
