PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University softball team had a few early chances, but then the bats fell silent in a 6-0 loss to the Texas A&M-San Antonio Jaguars Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Park to drop the series.
Texas A&M-San Antonio (13-12, 6-6 RRAC) plated one in the top of the first inning, but Louisiana Christian (13-15, 5-7 RRAC) had a great chance to jump ahead right out of the gate as both
Mariel Medrano and
Lexi Broussard started the bottom of the first with back-to-back base hits through the left side of the Jaguar defense.
Maci Baldwin did her job by sacrificing herself to move them both into scoring position, and then
Isabella Battaglia was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But back-to-back ground balls to shortstop kept the Wildcats from plating any runs.
After TAMUSA added another in the second, LCU had another good chance as
Myah Talbert came up with one out and smashed the ball down the left field line which hit the very top of the wall for a double. A pair of fly balls surrounded a walk, stranding another pair of Wildcat base runners.
The only other time the Wildcats threatened with a runner in scoring position with less than two outs was in the bottom of the seventh as Medrano led off with a bunt single and Baldwin drew a one-out walk to give LCU runners on first and second, but a late, large rally was not in the cards as they were left stranded.
Medrano was the only LCU batter with more than one hit in the game, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
Talbert's lone hit of the game was LCU's lone extra base hit in the contest, a double. She was 1-for-2 and drew a walk as well.
Battaglia was 1-for-3 and was hit by a pitch.
Carly Carpenter (1-1) got the start and threw 4.1 innings from the circle. She allowed seven hits and four runs, three earned, with three walks and one strikeout.
Katelyn Carpenter finished the contest, throwing the final 2.2 innings and allowed four hits and two runs, both earned, with no walks and two strikeouts.
The Wildcats now head on the road for back-to-back weekends, starting with a trip to San Antonio to take on #8 Our Lady of the Lake. The series with the #8 Saints (24-4, 12-0 RRAC) starts with a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch of game one set for 12 p.m. at the OLLU Softball Field.
