SAN ANTONIO – The Louisiana Christian University softball team found the offense hard to come by in a pair of defeats to the #8 Our Lady of the Lake Saints, falling 6-1 and 5-0 Friday afternoon at the OLLU Softball Field.
Game 1 - #8 Our Lady of the Lake 8, Louisiana Christian 1
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Louisiana Christian (13-17, 5-9 RRAC) took advantage of a miscue by #8 Our Lady of the Lake (26-4, 14-0 RRAC) to get its lone run of the contest.
An error by the OLLU shortstop not only allowed
Myah Talbert to reach base but to get to second on the miscue. She moved to third on
Madelyn Bourgoyne's ground ball that way and came home as
Naya Soto's fly ball to right was deep enough to allow her to tag up and score, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
But that would be all the offense for the Wildcats as the Saints added three in the third to break the game open and an insurance run in the sixth.
Soto and
Hannah Harrison each had a hit to account for the two LCU hits in game one. Soto tallied the RBI.
Katelyn Carpenter (1-3) got the start and threw 2.1 innings in the circle. She allowed seven hits and five runs, all earned, with three walks and no strikeouts.
Carly Carpenter threw 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and one run, which was earned, with two walks and no strikeouts.
Samantha Hill got the final two outs, allowing one hit and no runs with no walks or strikeouts.
Game 2 - #8 Our Lady of the Lake 5, Louisiana Christian 0
The Wildcats were again stymied throughout the nightcap, not getting a base runner until the seventh inning as
Mariel Medrano reached on an error to lead off the frame. LCU's lone hit of the game came three batters later as Talbert got a base knock to avoid the no hitter, but LCU couldn't get the run in to avoid the shutout.
OLLU plated one in the second and two each in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Talbert had the one hit while Medrano stole a base after reaching on the error in the seventh inning.
Olivia Falcon (6-6) threw all six innings and allowed eight hits and five runs, all earned, with two walks and one strikeout.
The Wildcats look to salvage a game in the series against the #8 Saints as the two teams wrap up the three-game set on Saturday with first pitch set for 12 p.m. at the OLLU Softball Field.
