SAN ANTONIO – The Louisiana Christian University men's basketball team got the ball in the hands of
Drew Tebbe for the final shot down one, and he sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Wildcats a 78-76 win over the Texas A&M-San Antonio Jaguars Thursday evening at the TAMUSA Recreational Sports Center.
In a game which was tight throughout, both teams held leads of seven points, which was the largest in the contest. Louisiana Christian (3-11, 2-6 RRAC) held its seven-point lead early as
Bryce Weinmunson hit a three-pointer to put the Wildcats up 15-8 with 14:15 left in the first half.
Texas A&M-San Antonio (4-11, 3-6 RRAC) capped a 9-0 run with a lay-up to take its seven-point lead at 56-49 with 13:10 left in the second half.
The two teams traded baskets to 60-53, and then a jumper by Tebbe started an 8-0 LCU run. That run ended as
Tomario Thomas, Jr. made all three shots from the charity stripe after being fouled on a three-point shot to give the Wildcats a 61-60 lead with 8:27 left.
Trailing 76-75 and having missed an earlier shot to reclaim the lead with the shot clock off, the Wildcats were granted a second chance as the Jaguars missed a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining and LCU rebounded.
After calling timeout and with one second left on the clock, Weinmunson found Tebbe who took in the bounce pass, turned, and put up the three-pointer from the left wing as the horn sounded, and it splashed home to give the Wildcats the win.
Justice Kelly led the way for the Wildcats in the win, getting his first double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He hit on five of his eight shot attempts and was eight-of-10 at the free throw line and dished out seven assists as well.
Thomas, Jr. came off the bench and hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to 15 points.
Weinmunson finished the night with 14 points, eight rebounds, six steals, and three assists, including one on Tebbe's game-winner.
Jalani Bell capped the evening with 10 points on three-of-five shooting, hitting two of his three attempts from long distance. He also had two rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
The game-winning shot gave Tebbe nine points to go with four rebounds and an assist.
LCU hit 41.7 percent from the field in the contest, and was even better from deep, hitting 46.7 percent on attempts from beyond the three-point arc. While giving up 45.9 percent shooting to the Jaguars on the evening, the Wildcat defense held TAMUSA to just 21.4 percent from deep, including holding the home squad without a made three in the second half.
The Wildcats wrap up their five-game road swing and the week in San Antonio on Saturday, taking on Our Lady of the Lake. Tip-off against the Saints (8-6, 6-2 RRAC) is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Mabee Gymnasium.
