Four-Run Second Propels Wildcats To First NAIA Regional Win, GGC Waits

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The #5 Louisiana Christian University baseball program had an offensive surge in the second and added a pair in the sixth, holding off a late charge from the #4 Bushnell to win an NAIA Regional ballgame for the first time in school history by dimming the Beacons in a 6-4 triumph.

Wildcats Top Performers:

  • Cy Fontenot did his job as the ace of the pitching staff, improving his record to 5-2 by spinning five innings of two-run baseball, working around seven baserunners (3 hits, 3 walks, 1 hit-by-pitch) thanks to a trio of strikeouts.

  • Adrian Aguilar drove in the day's first two RBIs, scoring the team's first two runs in nearly 40 years (1987) with a frozen rope line drive single just out of the reach of the second baseman, as both Logan Bertucci and Nicholas Brunet touched the plate. For the morning, he reached safely three times with a pair of knocks and a hit-by-pitch.

  • Braxton Cooksey logged just one hit, but it was huge in the grand scheme of things, swinging the momentum pendulum firmly onto the Orange and Blue side for the remainder of the contest as he shot a ground ball through the left side to bring two more across the dish for a four-run second frame.

  • Logan Bertucci had the only extra-base hit for the Cats, doubling as well as walking while scoring each time on.

  • Jayden Drake picked the opportune time for his first career save, locking down the Beacons over the final two frames, ceding zero runs nor walks with just one hit given up.

  • Luke Morgan joined Aguilar on the list of student-athletes to reach safely a trio of times, going 2-for-3 (.667) with a pair of singles, a bean ball, and a ribbie.

  • The third and final player with that distinction was Nicholas Brunet during a 2-of-4 (.500) affair that saw him draw a free pass and score a run.

Notes:

  • Louisiana Christian had made the NAIA Regionals once before back in 1987 as the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Regular Season Champions, but fell in both of their matchups, versus Grand Canyon (9-4) and Lubbock Christian (14-12) in Lubbock, Texas.

Next:

  • A tall task stands immediately in front of the Diamond Cats as they will try to topple the juggernaut hosts, the number one seed and second-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies at 4 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. ET.
