PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University athletics program recognizes baseball's
Coleman Haltom and softball's
Olivia Coaker as this week's LCU Student-Athletes of the Week with the former being named the Red River Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Â
Haltom, a junior righty from Olive Branch, Mississippi, came jogging in out of right field during game two vs. (RV) Houston-Victoria and ground the Jaguars offense to a screeching halt, tossing a season-high five scoreless and hitless innings while averaging a strikeout per frame (a season-best five) with his lone blemish being a single walk. Additionally, the Itawamba Community College transfer picked up his first career victory at a four-year institution. In that one outing alone, he lowered his ERA nearly 2.3 points and now joins only Braxton Cooksey as well as Jacob Bareswill among players with both a win and a save this season. Over 22.0 innings of work spread across 14 relief appearances in 2024, Haltom has fanned 26 batters while yielding just 11 walks.
Â
Coaker, a Senior infielder from Orange Beach, Alabama, led the Wildcats in batting average (.455), slugging percentage (.545), total bases (6) and had one of the team's two sacrifice flies. For the week, she hit .455 (5-of-11) with a pair of RBIs, a double & a sacrifice fly. The 2023 All-RRAC Second Team selection is hitting .359 on the season with 28 hits, 20 RBIs, ten walks, eight doubles and runs scored, two sacrifice flies, and a home run.
Â
Baseball looks to finish the job it started on Tuesday night as they get its second shot at McNeese State University in Lake Charles for a 6 p.m. first pitch before the last RRAC series of the campaign on Friday and Saturday against Texarkana on George Dobson Field.
Â
The softball team concludes its regular season against the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs on Tuesday for a 4/6 p.m. doubleheader in what will be a day to celebrate the life of former Wildcat softball player and collegiate coach Abby Sterling, who passed away in November. Sterling, who transferred from Louisiana-Lafayette and was a member of the 2018 and 2019 squads, went on to become a well-known softball coach for Arkansas Rich Mountain, Angelina CC, and Texas-Dallas. A ceremony will take place pregame with her sister, Madeline Sterling Vanderweg, being presented a plaque as well as hanging one up inside the Wildcats' locker room. Please join us as we celebrate the life of Abigail Ann Sterling and her impact that she had on the softball community.
