Cardiac Cats: Waxley & Brunet Deliver Back-To-Back Walk-Offs To Beat (RV) UHV

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University baseball program just turned an eight-game losing streak into a two-game winning streak on a magical night in CenLa as the Wildcats clinched the series victory over (RV) Houston-Victoria with not one, but two walk-off singles by Harrison Waxley (Game 1) and Nicholas Brunet (Game 2) gave the Orange and Blue, plus their fans, a much-needed shot in the arm during a 3-2 and 5-4 doubleheader sweep.

Wildcats Top Performers:

  • Waxley was scalding hot at the plate on the afternoon/evening, going 4-for-7 (.571) to lead the ballclub while belting his second home run of the season, a two-RBI shot which tied the nightcap at four, in addition to his clutch walk-off single, walking in the old-fashioned sense on top of that.

  • Brunet tied with his teammate for the RBI crown as well as the top hit-getter versus the visitors from Victoria at three and four respectively, batting .444 (4-of-9) for a trio of ribbies.

  • With a pair of free passes in the opener along with reaching safely four times in the following contest (2-for-3, two walks, a double and a run scored), Tyler McKenna has now hit the quarter-century mark in terms of his on-base streak, ballooning the ever-growing number to 25 consecutive for the catcher / designated hitter.

  • Not to go unnoticed was a pitching staff who locked in through adversity to put up spectacular numbers:

*Thrown into the fire just minutes before first pitch, Kade Linn dazzled in his debut as a starting pitcher, wheeling and dealing his way to five strikeouts over four frames of work while allowing just a single run.

*The second half of the twin-bill belonged to Coleman Haltom, spinning five hitless and scoreless innings to pick up his first career victory, ceding just a single baserunner via a walk.

*The final two hurlers we would like to give a shoutout to were Jayden Drake and Braxton Cooksey, who combined to go the final four innings of the series opener while surrendering a lone run with four K's as Cooksey improved his record to a healthy 4-2 in 2024.

  • Adrian Aguilar only had one hit, but it was a big one, legging out an RBI triple on top of scoring twice as he ate a bean ball and made Houston-Victoria pay for it.

  • Caleb Duhon was resourceful as despite also logging just one base knock (a double) he still managed to get on four times courtesy of an additional two bases on balls plus a hit-by-pitch.

  • Finally, Logan Bertucci and Nick Lorio each cashed in two singles apiece with the former coaxing a ball four and crossing the dish.

Next:

  • The home nine are currently sitting in a three-way tie for third heading into Senior Day on Saturday at noon and can leapfrog the Jags into second with a series sweep. Make sure to get to the park early as the Senior Day festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. sharp.
