KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Louisiana Christian University men's soccer program is currently preparing for Thursday night's Red River Athletic Conference semifinal bout with #3 seed Xavier (Louisiana), but according to the voters the Cats should be the favorite the rest of the way as they are the only team in the league receiving votes at #29.
Â
The Cats sport the best season winning percentage (.722) by a Wildcats team after eclipsing last year's mark (.700) while they are tied for the team record for most wins in a single season, matching last year's mark at 11.
Â
Earlier this season, Head Coach
David Castillo became the winningest coach in program history as he has compiled a record of 33-19-10 (.613) over four seasons with the Orange and Blue.
Â
As a whole, the club has compiled the 17th-most shutouts in the NAIA (9) behind a stout line of defenders like
Taylor Walker,
Pedro Rivera,
Lucas Lima,
Tarik Abdala, and
Alejandro Aranda Molina.
Â
Three student-athletes have been huge catalysts for this historic campaign as
Sergio Pita Martin,
Adrian Amoros Navarro, and
Rodrigo Silva are the heartbeat of the team.
Â
Winger / striker Pita Martin leads the Red River in points (31), goals (14), and penalty kick goals (2) while being gifted with the unteachable clutch gene, producing three game-winners to land himself among the top-40 in that category.
Â
Midfielder
Adrian Amoros Navarro has been one of the most selfless players in the nation, dishing out the sixth-most assists (15), logging the 14th-highest assists average (0.83), and ranking second in the league behind fellow Spaniard Pita Martin for overall points (29).
Â
The backbone of the lockdown defense has been keeper
Rodrigo Silva, spending all but 35 minutes between the pipes as he boasts the tenth-most wins in the NAIA (11) and is 17th for complete game shutouts at seven.
Â
#2 LCU will attempt to reach its second RRAC Championship Game in as many seasons with a win on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. versus #3 Xavier (Louisiana) in Texarkana.
