Wildcats Scoring Surge Ensures Split with (RV) Saints

LCU Scores Season High 17 Runs in Game One Win over (RV) OLLU

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Louisiana Christian University softball team had the big bats out for game one, scoring a season high 17 runs in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against (RV) Our Lady of the Lake, including a crucial three-run home run by Jordan Dauthier, that helped the Wildcats pull out a split against the Saints, winning game one 17-15 before dropping game two 8-2 Friday afternoon at the OLLU Softball Field.

Game 1 – Louisiana Christian 17, Our Lady of the Lake 15

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead off a two-RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Wildcats took advantage of a loss of command by the OLLU pitching staff to strike for six runs in the top of the second, all with two outs. With the bases loaded, Maci Rozas was hit by a pitch and both KayeLea Dearmon and Jaclyn Deason both walked to all force home runs, giving the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. Olivia Coaker then had the big hit in the inning, a double over the center fielder's head to clear the bases and double LCU's scoring output for a 6-2 lead.

LCU extended the lead in the third inning as a Maci Rozas ground ball was bobbled, allowing Hailey Vitrano to score to put the Wildcats up five. However, OLLU got that run back in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-3 after three complete.

After the Saints added another in the fourth to get back within three, The Wildcats appeared to take full control of the game in the fifth with a four-spot in the inning. Kayla Dauthier came home on a passed ball. Jordan Dautier beat out a throw home on a ground ball to short to score. Maci Rozas later scored on a passed ball as well, and an Olivia Coaker base hit drove in Emma Hunt for an 11-4 Wildcat lead.

But OLLU started rallying in the bottom of the fifth as two runs scored on an infield base hit to cut the LCU lead to 11-6. LCU reestablished a six-run lead in the top of the sixth as a Jordan Dauthier RBI single through the left side scored Kayla Dauthier for a 12-6 Wildcat lead. However, the bottom of the sixth did not go the way the Wildcats intended as the Saints plated six runs in the frame to tie the score at 12-12 before the Wildcats were able to throw out the runner who represented the leading run trying to steal second base to end the inning.

Knowing runs would be needed in the seventh, the Wildcats came up clutch. With Meredith Perry on second following a walk and wild pitch to open the inning, Miah Broussard dropped a base hit into left to score Perry and give LCU the lead back. A new pitcher didn't matter to Bella Houck, who dropped a base hit just inside the right field foul line to trade places with pinch runner Stella Shaw for a little bit of insurance. But the big bit of insurance came three batters later. With runners on first and second and one out, Jordan Dauthier lifted a pitch against a blowing wind and just cleared the left field fence for a three-run home run to put the Wildcats up 17-12.

However, the Saints would not go away easy in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring three runs and had the winning run at the plate before a strike out of the nine-hole hitter ended the game and the Wildcats could celebrate a second win of the season over a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Jordan Dauthier had a game in the win, going three of four at the plate, including her second home run of the season, with a walk and drove in four runs while scoring three times herself. Olivia Coaker went two of five with a double and four RBI. Kayla Dauthier went two for five with a double and two runs scored. Emma Hunt went two for four and scored a run. Bella Houck went one for four with a double, a walk, a RBI, and two runs scored. KayeLea Dearmon, Jaclyn Deason, Jana Taylor, and Miah Broussard all picked up a RBI in the game.

Miah Broussard (4-0) got the final six outs, allowing four hits and three runs, all earned, walked two and struck out two in game one. McKenna Gehr started and gave up one hit and one run, which was earned without recording an out. Olivia Coaker threw 4.2 innings and gave up five hits and five runs, all earned, with five walks and three strikeouts. Bailey McMillian got one out but was credited with three hits and six runs, all earned, with three walks.

Game 2 – Louisiana Christian 2, Our Lady of the Lake 8

OLLU jumped out again in the first inning of game two, scoring on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. But the Saints jumped on the Wildcats in the second inning as OLLU put up six runs in the frame, including back-to-back home runs of a grand slam and a solo shot to bust the game open at 7-0 Saints.

The Wildcats tried to respond in the third inning as Miah Broussard tried to help her own cause with a double to left which scored both Desiree Squires and Kayla Dauthier, but that would be all the offense LCU could muster in the second game.

OLLU added another solo home run in the fifth to get the lead out to 8-2, which represented the final score.

Desiree Squires led the LCU offense in the nightcap, going two for three at the plate with a double and a run scored. Kayla Dauthier went one for two with a walk and a run scored. Miah Broussard went one for three with a double and two RBI.

After picking up the game one win, Miah Broussard (4-1) went the distance in the circle for the Wildcats in game two, throwing all six innings and allowed seven hits and eight runs, seven earned, walked two and struck out two.

The Wildcats (16-9, 5-1 RRAC) continue their San Antonio road trip on Saturday with two games against fellow RRAC newcomer Texas A&M-San Antonio, looking to finish their trip to the Alamo City with a winning record. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader against the Jaguars (9-15, 5-3 RRAC) is set for 11:00 A.M. at the Tejeda Sports Complex.
