PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College men's soccer team found itself in a sudden death situation for a third time this season, and like its previous two, it was the Wildcats that struck gold as
Adrian Amoros Navarro scored the golden goal to give LC a 3-2 win over the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles Thursday night at Wildcat Field.
The first half nearly went the distance without a goal, only for LC to find itself in another similar position, having to play from behind as TAMUT got a shock goal in the 44
th minute to take the lead right before the break.
Coming out of the break, the Wildcats took little time to level the score as
Santino Savastano Farr too advantage of a mistake along the Eagle back line that allowed him to get on the ball near the top of the box and score to get LC level at 1-1 in the 49
th minute.
It didn't take long for LC to get its first lead of the match, as just two minutes later,
Jorge Duran Granados got onto the ball in the box, passed over to an open
Arturo Riestra Torrejon, who shot across the face of the goal and into the top corner of the net to put the Wildcats up 2-1 in the 51
st minute.
LC was able to maintain the lead for the next 20-plus minutes, only to see it be undone by a foul that set up a free kick from a dangerous area, which the Eagles converted into a goal to level the score line again at 2-2 in the 78
th minute.
With neither team finding the winning goal in the remaining 12 minutes of the 90, the match would be determined in overtime. Texas A&M-Texarkana won a corner kick that got into a dangerous area and nearly saw the ball trickle on goal, but the Wildcats were able to clear it. On the ensuing counterattack,
Santino Savastano Farr brought the ball up the left side before switching it over to
Alvaro Tudanca on the right. Tudanca immediately sent it back to Savanstano Farr, who chested down the pass and sent the ball over towards an onrushing
Adrian Amoros Navarro. Amoros Navarro read the ball perfectly off one hop and shot the ball under the goalkeeper and inside the right post for the golden goal in the 94
th minute to end the game.
Adrian Amoros Navarro's game-winning goal was his fourth goal of the season and first to determine the match's outcome. Amoros Navarro took two shots in the match, with the game-winner being the one on target.
Arturo Riestra Torrejon took six shots to collect his sixth goal of the season, the only one that was on frame.
Santino Savastano Farr's only shot in the match resulted in his first goal of the year while also being credited with his first assist of the season on the overtime golden goal.
Jorge Duran Granados was credited with his first assist of the season as well in the match. The Wildcats took 17 shots and put eight on target in the match.
Martin Hernandez (4-0) made his return to the face of goal for the Wildcats. He was credited with a team season high eight saves in the contest as the Eagles sent 28 shots towards his net, ten of which were on target.
The Wildcats (7-4, 2-3 RRAC) look to build off this result on Saturday when they head up I-49 to Shreveport to take on LSU Shreveport. Kickoff against the Pilots (5-6, 2-3 RRAC) is set for 3:30 P.M. at The Swamp on the LSU Shreveport campus.
