Baseball Win Pair Over War Hawks

Louisiana College baseball picked up their fourth straight series win on Friday night with a doubleheader sweep of McMurry University at Billy Allgood Field. The Wildcats took game one by a score of 6-1 as Deauton Delgado tossed a complete game. The Cats out slugged McMurry in game two winning 16-8, breaking things open with a pair of 3-run home runs late. LC will go for their second American Southwest Conference sweep of the year on Saturday at noon.

Game One

The Wildcats seemed sluggish to start the day, at the plate, on the mound, and in the field. Despite hitting some pitches on the nose, the Cats had nothing to show for their effort through three innings. The found themselves trailing the War Hawks entering the bottom of the fourth 1-0.

Brady Atkins provided the spark the Cats needed with a leadoff double, then after back-to-back walks, the Wildcats had their best scoring chance of the game with the bases loaded and 1-out. Dane Pedersen drove a ball to the right center gap, beyond the reach of the diving center fielder, and cleared the bases with a triple to put the Cats up 3-1 with one swing. Deauton Delgado would follow with a double down the left field line and Dylan Keller a base hit to right and before McMurry could blink it was 5-1 LC.

The offensive spark was more than enough for Delgado on the mound, as he had settled into the game after the slow start, finding the strike zone with more regularity, scattering five hits over the final five innings after allowing five in the first two innings.

With Delgado cruising on the mound the Cats would put the game away with another run in the bottom of the sixth as Pederson would come in on a passed ball after starting the inning with a double.

The effort from Delgado on the mound was his third complete game of the season, improving his record to 5-2 overall, adding seven strikeouts to his team best 46 on the year.

Game Two

The Wildcats had no lack of fire to start the second game, tearing the cover off the ball in the first inning. A two-base error in left allowed the first run of the game to score for LC and opened the floodgates. Back-to-back doubles from Deauton Delgado and Konner James brought three more runs in and a fourth double of the inning from Ty Morgan put the Cats up 5-0 after the first inning of play.

The first inning barrage by the Wildcats would be just the tip of the iceberg for what the second game had to offer as McMurry scored five straight runs, three in the third and two in the fourth, all with two outs, to tie the game at five midway through the fourth inning. LC would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning with a first and third situation playing out in the Cats' favor as Brady Atkins dove home safely with Christian Vandergrift taking off for second. A sacrifice fly from Clayton Noakes made it 7-5 Cats after four. Ashton Martin's RBI-double in the fifth put LC up 8-5, the Wildcat pitching staff who had their ups and downs in game two, ran into some trouble in the sixth.

A seemingly innocuous error to start the inning put a runner on, then a hit batter and a walk would load the bases with 1-out. With the outfield shaded to pull, McMurry's Mike Gonzalez put one down the right field line for a bases clearing triple to tie the game once again, this time at eight.

The Wildcats responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Two walks put a pair on base for Deauton Delgado who blasted the seventh pitch of the at-bat, on a 3-and-2 count over the left center field wall to put the Wildcats back on top and take the air out of the McMurry dugout. Phillip Vidrine got the clutch 1-2-3 inning on defense to get the Cats back to the plate, where they would blow the game open in the seventh.

With the bases loaded, the Cats would score two runs on wild pitches before Clayton Noakes would launch his seventh long ball of the season, a no-doubt shot to left, to give LC the 16-8 lead after seven innings of play. Colten Newsom, the fifth LC pitcher of the night, would get the final six outs of the game to secure the Wildcats fourth ASC series win of the year and improve their record to 23-6 overall and 10-4 in conference play.

On the day both Brady Atkins and Clayton Noakes extended their offensive streaks by two games. Atkins now has a season-best 17-game hitting streak while Noakes has reached base in 28 straight games, Atkins has the second longest streak currently at 18 in a row.

The Wildcats will try and complete their second ASC series sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Billy Allgood Field.
