Softball Shut Out by Cru

Louisiana College softball embarked on their final road series of the season on Friday afternoon, playing a pair of games against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. It was a quiet day at the plate for the Wildcats on the day as LC was shutout in both games on the day, losing by scores of 4-0 and 5-0 to the Cru.

Game One

The first game of the day was a true pitchers duel throughout the majority. The Cru picked up their first run on a shallow fly ball to center that fell in with the bases loaded allowing the run to score but the Wildcats picking up an out at third. The 1-0 lead for UMHB would hold up over the next three innings as 11 Wildcats in a row were retired following a leadoff single from Briley Johnston in the top of the third.

The Cru would break the game open with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth on a 3-run home run. The Wildcats would make things interesting in the seventh with the first two batters reaching base, and loading them with one out. A pop up to second and a ground ball to third would end the game and strand all three runners, giving the Cru the 4-0 victory.

Game Two

The second game of the day would begin much differently as the Cru jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings of play. A 2-out double plated the first two runs, which was followed by and RBI single in the first. Two more 2-out doubles in the second brought in two more runs for the Cru in the second and gave them an early lead on the Cats.

LC did have chances in both the first and second innings to pick up runs but each time would come up empty. Back-to-back strikeouts in the first left runners at second and third and a ground ball to short with the bases loaded in the second ended that threat without any runs.

The Wildcats would not get another hit until the top of the sixth, a lead off single by Abby Sterling, who's pinch runner was eliminated on a line out double play back to the pitcher. LC would once again make their last at-bat interesting for the home team as they got runners to second and third with one-out. It would be a pair of ground balls though that would end the threat and the game for the Cats as they suffered their third shutout of the week.

Despite the two loses, the Wildcats secured their spot in the postseason thanks to two loses on Friday by Concordia (TX) to Howard Payne. LC will finish the regular season on Saturday afternoon in Belton at 12pm. Stay connected to Louisiana College softball by following @LC_sftball on Twitter.
