Cats Lose Pitcher's Duel

For the second straight day the Louisiana College softball team would come up empty at the plate, as they were shut out for the third straight game by Mary Hardin-Baylor in a 3-0 loss to finish the season. The Wildcats finish the regular season with a 21-19 record overall and 11-16 mark in conference play. LC will enter the ASC tournament as the number eight seed and play the five seed Sul Ross State on Thursday afternoon in Marshall, Texas.

Hits were at a premium in the series finale as both teams sent their ace pitchers to the circle for game three. Neither team would get a base runner passed second base through the first five and a half innings of play. The Wildcats got runners to second in both the first and third innings, and after a double by Haley Vezinat to start the fifth, appeared to have the chance to break the scoreless tie. Vezinat was cut down at third trying to advance on a ball hit to short and the inning would end on a groundout by the next batter.

Both Sarah Gartman and UMHB's Kathryn Reed were locked in a duel with the Wildcats four hits through six times to the plate and the Cru with two through five. It would be the bottom of the sixth that would spell the demise for the Wildcats.

The Cru led off with a double, and after moving to third on a fly ball to center, got their first run of the game on a single to right. The next batter would provide insurance in the form of a 2-run home run and giving the home team a 3-0 lead. Gartman would get out of the inning with no more trouble but the Cats were suddenly down to their final three outs of the game.

Two ground ball and a fly ball to left would end the inning in order as the Wildcats suffered their third straight shutout of the weekend, and fourth of the week. LC will make it's 16thASC tournament appearance and eighth in a row. They play in an elimination game on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Sul Ross State in Marshall, Texas on the campus of ETBU.
