Softball Ends With 2-1 Loss in Tourney

The Louisiana College softball season season ended on Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sul Ross State University in the American Southwest Conference tournament. In another closely played game, the Wildcats could not muster the offense when they needed it and take advantage of early run scoring opportunities.

The Wildcats had a chance to take the early lead with runners at first and third with just one out in the top of the second. A ground ball back to the pitcher was the second out but put runners at second and third with one hit giving the potential of two runs. The threat would end with a strikeout and two runners were left on base in scoring position.

A 1-out double by Kaylea Dearmon in the fourth was the next scoring chance for the Cats, as she advanced to third on a grounder to second. The third runner left on base in scoring position would come at the end of the inning as a soft grounder to second was the third out. LC would get a bunt single in the fifth from Briley Johnston but she was thrown out trying to steal second and squashed a would-be rally.

Wildcat freshman ace Sarah Gartman kept LC in the game with yet another stellar performance in the circle. She allowed three hits through four innings of play and didn't allow a runner to get passed second base until the fifth. With two outs and a runner on first, the Lobos would take the lead on a 1-2 pitch that was hit over the left field wall to put them on top 2-0.

The Wildcats went down in order in the sixth, but created some drama in the seventh. A third hit, and second double, by Dearmon put the lead off runner aboard. A ground out and strikeout put the Cats down to their last out of the season. Jady Brady singled in a run to left to cut the lead in half and put the tying run on base. After a four-pitch walk, the needed run reached second, but a strikeout would end the inning and the season for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats stumbled down the home stretch of the season and ended the year at 21-20 overall. Senior Shelby Bergeron finished the season with a .462 batting average, breaking the single-season mark of .441 set by Mattie Stine a year ago.
