Wildcats Lose First Home Game of the Season

It took until the final weekend of the regular season but on Friday night Louisiana College baseball lost their first home game of the year. The 9-4 loss to rival East Texas Baptist University also shut to door on the Wildcats' hopes of hosting one of the two American Southwest Conference postseason brackets next weekend.

Both teams would waste doubles in the first inning, not getting that second hit that would bring the first run of the game around in the opening frame. In the second inning however, a two base error would lead to the Tigers first run on a base hit to center. LC starter Andrew Robinson would limit the damage in the inning to just the one run but the Tigers were already seeing the ball well off the junior righty.

The Wildcats had a chance to put multiple runs on the board in the bottom of the inning with the first three batters reaching base. Ty Morgan tied the game on a sacrifice fly to right, and after a wild pitch LC had runners at second and third with just one away. A fly ball to shallow center and a ground ball to second would end the inning and ETBU would escape further damage.

Three straight hits, two of them doubles, in the third would add two runs to ETBU's score line. Three more base hits in the fourth put the Tigers up 5-1. LC would get a run back in the bottom of the inning on a lead off homer by Dylan Keller to give the Wildcats some life, but a double play later in the inning erased a walk and sent things to the fifth at 5-2.

It would be the sixth inning that would prove to be the downfall for the Cats in the game. The first five batters of the inning would reach base on a walk and four straight base hits, that were placed just beyond the reach of the LC fielders. ETBU would bring across four runs in the inning and take a commanding 9-2 lead late in the game.

The Wildcats got the first to batters on in the bottom of the inning via walks, but a pitching change and three straight outs ended any threat until the ninth inning. A double into the right field corner off the bat of Brodie Falgoust got LC their first run since the Keller long ball in the bottom of the ninth and put runners at second and third with still no one out. A walk loaded the bases, but ETBU had plenty of runs to surrender to get the final three outs they needed. A pair of fielder's choice outs, including and RBI groundout by Clayton Noakes, made it two outs with a strikeout ending the game.

The rivals will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Billy Allgood Filed beginning at 12pm. The Wildcats will also recognize the 2019 senior class between games of the pair.
