Baseball Beats ETBU on Senior Day

Louisiana College baseball closed out the 2019 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of wins over conference rival East Texas Baptist University. The Wildcats scored in the sixth to win game one 3-2, then jumped out to an early lead to win 7-3 in game two. The Wildcats have secured at least a four seed in the upcoming ASC tournament and await the results of other games for their tournament opponent and destination.

Game One

The Tigers would strike first in the top of the first after three singles loaded the bases and a ground ball to third allowed the run to come in. LC starter Deauton Delgado would escape the inning with not further damage. The Wildcats would tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Christian Vandergrift to left field.

Delgado found himself in another pickle in the second with runners at second and third with one-out but he would skirt damage by getting a pop up to short and a grounder to third to end the inning. LC would take the lead in the bottom of the inning after two errors on the same play put runners at second and third for LC with no out. Dane Pedersen put the Cats on top with a base hit to right but that would be all they would get as the inning ended on a rare 3-2-1 double play.

The score remained in the Wildcats' favor through four innings until the Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. ETBU tied the game on a sacrifice fly to shallow right after a diving catch from Dylan Keller. Delgado would again limit things to one run getting a ground ball to second to end the threat and leave the game tied at two.

Keelyn Johnson led off the sixth with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. On the first pitch of the at-bat Pedersen sent a ball to right field with Johnson being waved around third. On a bang-bang play at the plate, the Wildcats got the safe call from the umpire and took the 3-2 lead, needing three outs to finish off the Tigers in game one.

The first batter of the seventh would reach on a hit by pitch, lifting Delgado from the game and calling on Phillip Vidrine to come on to try and get the save. Three pop ups on the infield later, Vidrine had the save, the Cats the win, and a new single season record for wins in a season at 28.

Game Two

Following the celebration of 13 Wildcats senior baseball players, LC took the field in the hopes of winning the series against their rival from ETBU. The Tigers started the game with a bang on a lead off home run down the right field line. The Cats though would respond immediately in the bottom of the inning.

Two straight hits, with the help of an error, and Keelyn Johnson would put the Cats on top with a 2-run single up the middle. A 2-out single in the top of the second would tie the game as ETBU had an answer. The Wildcats would respond again getting the run back on a sacrifice fly to center, but that would be all that would come from the bases loaded, one out situation.

A move to the bullpen brought Caleb Prejean into the game and began a run of six straight scoreless innings between the senior southpaw and Dylan Roark who entered the game in the fifth. The two would shut down the ETBU lineup over the next six innings allowing just three hits and five total base runners. Roark retired 10 in a row at one point and 12 of the first 13 batters he would face, before giving way to Phillip Vidrine in the ninth.

While the ETBU offense was put on lockdown, the Wildcats continued to score in the early part of the game. A 2-out single to center from Ty Morgan made it a 4-2 LC lead then back-to-back walks, the second a bases loaded one to Brady Atkins put the Cats up by three after three innings.

The Wildcats missed a scoring chance in the fifth, but would capitalize on one in the seventh. LC loaded the bases with no outs but a pop up to first and a strikeout gave the Tigers two outs and a chance to get out of the inning. Lead off batter Brady Atkins would pick up his second and third RBI of the day on a single through the right side on a 3-2 pitch that put the Cats up 7-2 after seven innings.

LC was in the same situation in the ninth that ETBU was in on Friday with a big lead and willing to trade runs for outs to win the game. The first two batters would reach, and the Cats would call for Vidrine out of the bullpen for the second time on the day. A fly ball to right, and then one to left would advance the runner from second to the plate, but give the Cats two outs in the process, still with a four run lead. The final out would come on a fly ball to left and the Cats would pick up the senior day sweep of the Tigers.

The 2019 Wildcats are now the winningest team since LC joined the NCAA reaching, closing the regular season with a 29-10 overall record, and a ridiculous 19-1 record at Billy Allgood Field. The Wildcats will play in one of the two first round brackets in the ASC tournament beginning next Thursday, as the likely four seed.
