Marathon Game Ends in Defeat

After more than 29 hours, that included two multi-hour delays the Louisiana College baseball team finally completed their first game of the Blue Bracket in the American Southwest Conference Tournament. The Wildcats were down 8-1 before the game was called on Thursday and moved to San Angelo, Texas, where UT Dallas would pick up where they left off offensively to win the game 11-2 sending LC to the losers' bracket. The Wildcats will play the loser of the LeTourneau/Howard Payne contest on Friday night.

The Comets got on the board early and often in Brownwood, scoring five runs in the first two innings off starting pitcher Deauton Delgado including three runs with 2-out in the second that made it a 5-1 game and sent the Wildcats to the bullpen early. The lone run for the Wildcats in Brownwood came in the bottom of the first on a Keelyn Johnson base hit to center, that tied the game at that point.

The Wildcat offense couldn't find their swing before the game was put on halt after the bottom of the fifth inning, with just two hits in four trips to the plate between the second and fifth. The Comets extended their lead in the meantime with a three-run frame in the fifth that included two unearned runs, before the weather intervened.

Due to continual rain and weather conditions in Brownwood, tournament officials made the decision to resume play 100 miles away at Angelo State University on Friday afternoon. The Comets definitely didn't leave their bats in Brownwood as they picked right up with a three-run sixth at the resumption of play at ASU and made it an 11-1 game.

The only offense for the Cats that remained, despite barreling up several pitches along the way, was a solo homerun by Deauton Delgado in the bottom of the seventh. The shot to left center was the 21st for the senior and ties him for the most home runs in a career at Louisiana College. The run also extended the game from being called due to run-rule and allowed for yet another weather delay to stall the contest in the top of the ninth.

With a runner on first and a 3-2 count on the batter, lightning within range of the field forced the teams off the field almost two hours before play could continue. Danny Wells would get the Cats out of the inning with no damage done, but LC could not muster the dramatic comeback in the ninth and fell game one 11-2.

The Wildcats will play in the losers' bracket with their backs against the wall in a win or go home scenario the rest of the weekend. The game against the loser of the LETU/HPU game will begin at approximately 8:45 pm. Stay connected to Louisiana College baseball by following @LC_bsb on Twitter.
