Tyler Takes Series with 5-1 Win

Louisiana College softball finished their three game non-conference series with the University of Texas-Tyler Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Park. In a well played game on both sides, it was the Patriots that would come away with the 5-1 win in the rubber game of the series, scoring three runs in the fourth to out duel the Widcats. LC will travel to Mary Hardin-Baylor this weekend for their final American Southwest Conference series of the year, in the hopes of securing a tournament spot in Marshall, Texas next weekend.

It would be the pitching that would control the game through the first three innings of play, with both teams creating their own scoring opportunities, but each time the opposing pitcher wiggling out of danger. If not for a nice toss back to Madison Dykes covering home on a passed ball by Peyton Eschette, UTT would have scored in the second but the out at home started three straight putout to keep the game scoreless after two innings.

LC got the leadoff batter on in the bottom of the third via a sharp single from Sami Walters, but a tough luck flare double play eliminated her from the base paths and quickly put two outs on the board. Tyler would finally break the scoreless draw in the fourth with two outs, and a runner on second, a single to center would plate the first run of the game.

A hit batter put another run on base and a shallow liner off the bat of the pinch hitter got past a diving Shelby Bergeron in center for a triple and two more runs crossing the plate, making it a 3-0 game at the midway point of the contest. The Wildcats would get one back in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff home run from Abby Sterling, her 10thof the season, making her just the second player in LC history to have 10 or more home runs in a single season.

The Patriots though would hit a long ball of their own in the top of the fifth to push the lead back to three at 4-1. LC had chances to make the game closer in the fifth and sixth with hits in each frame, but each time would come up short with s strikeout in the fifth and double play in the sixth.

The Wildcats currently sit in the sixth spot in the ASC standings with the top eight teams earning a trip to Marshall for the conference tournament. LC will play three important games in Belton, Texas this weekend that will determine their postseason fate. Stay connected to Louisiana College softball by following @LC_sftball on Twitter.
