Bergeron Reaches 100; Cats Spilt with Pats

Behind a stellar pitching performance from freshman Sarah Gartman, the Louisiana College softball team picked up a doubleheader spilt with the visiting University of Texas-Tyler Patriots on Tuesday night. After falling 9-0 and managing only two hits in the opener, the Wildcats scored three early runs and held the lead for Gartman the rest of the way in the nightcap. The win is the first over the Patriots since April of 2014 and the first home win since 2012.

Game One

Facing off against one of the top pitchers in the American Southwest Conference the Wildcat offense was held in check for the entire six-inning affair. Maicey Spillers beat out an infield single in the second and Abby Sterling shot a ball back up the middle in the sixth for the only two hits for the Wildcats in the game.

The Patriots took the early lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first and held the 1-0 through three full innings. They would add to their lead with a five run inning in the fourth, scoring three runs with two out to go up 6-0 midway through the inning. The Wildcats best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back walks to start the inning. A pair of ground balls to the middle infielders and a strikeout would end the inning after the next three batters stepped to the plate.

Another three runs with two outs in the sixth would push the Patriots beyond the run-rule limit where the Wildcats could not answer. The shutout is the second of the season for the Wildcats, the other coming in a 1-0 loss at East Texas Baptist.

Game Two

A lead off single by Shelby Bergeron in the first inning of the second game would set the table for history and the Wildcats first run of the game. After advancing to second on a ground out to second, Bergeron would steal third during a walk by Abby Sterling, recording the 100thsteal in her career, becoming the first player to reach the century mark in the category in program history.

Bergeron would score the first run of the game and the inning on a groundball to first and an error. Two more errors by the shortstop on bouncing balls by Samantha Cetta and Briley Johnston allowed two more runs to come in for the Cats and they would have a 3-0 lead after the first inning of play.

Bergeron would single to start the second but the Cats would not get another hit until an infield single from Alyssa Ross in the bottom of the fifth, their only two other hits after the first inning.

Pitching with the lead from the first, freshman Sarah Gartman was impressive against the high-powered Patriots. The only blemish would come in the fourth inning after a single and double started the inning for UTT. A ground out to short and a big strikeout gave the Wildcats two out and a chance to get out of the inning unscathed, but a hit batter and a walk would plate a run before another strikeout to end the inning with the bases loaded.

The Patriots would get the tying run on base in the sixth after a 2-out walk, but once again Gartman would shut the door getting an easy fly ball to right to end the inning. She would get a tapper right back to her and a pair of pop ups to the outfield in the seventh to secure the Wildcats' first win over Tyler since April 2014.

The Wildcats and Patriots will play the rubber game of the season on Wednesday afternoon starting at 1pm at Wildcat Park.
