Cats Shutout Tornado

After a tough Friday at the ballpark, the Louisiana College softball team responded with a quality 4-0 win over visiting Concordia University to prevent the weekend sweep at the hands of the Tornado. Junior pitcher Cameron Crochet threw a complete game shutout while the LC offense struck for three quick runs in the second inning to give Crochet the cushion she needed.

Briley Johnston would start the two out rally in the second by drawing a walk on four pitches then swiping second base to put herself in scoring position. Sami Walters drove her in on a base hit to left center to break the scoreless tie then moved to second on a steal to put herself in scoring position. She would come around on a bunt single and throwing error by the third baseman off the bat of Shelby Bergeron who ended up a third base after the play. Alyssa Ross would double her in to give the Cats the 3-0 lead after two innings of play.

Another Ross base hit in the fourth, a base hit up the middle, scored the Wildcats' fourth and final run of the game. The four runs was all LC needed as Cameron Crochet, who made her first start in almost a month, continued to keep the Tornado off the scoreboard. She only allowed more than one hit in an inning on two occasions escaped each of those instances unscathed.

The best chance for the Tornado to score came in the fourth after the first two batters reached and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt, putting runners at second and third with one-out. Maicey Spillers made a nice play on an attempted squeeze bunt to get the runner at the plate, and Crochet would get the next batter on a soft liner to short for the final out to keep CTX off the board.

The Wildcats even averted disaster in the dreaded seventh inning after two batters reached with two out, but a tapper back to the circle and a toss to first prevented another potential nightmare finish for the Cats to stave off the series sweep.
