Wildcats Swept on Senior Day

The Louisiana College softball team played the first two of their three game conference series with Concordia University on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Park. The Tornado would have two big innings in each of the two games that propelled them to the doubleheader sweep of the Wildcats. CTX won 7-1 to start the day and ended with a five-run seventh to secure the series win on a 6-4 game two victory.

Game One

The Wildcats missed a pair of scoring opportunities early in game one. Shelby Bergeron led off the first with a double, but was left standing at third base and Briley Johnston hit a 1-out triple in the second, but was too left standing at third at the end of the inning. LC would finally break through in the fourth on a 2-out base hit to left from Sami Walters that scored Bre Newman from second to put the Cats up 1-0 after the inning.

Wildcat starter Sarah Gartman cruised through the first four innings without issue but ran into issues in the top of the fifth giving up a leadoff double, the eventual tying run that scored on a fielder's choice. With 1-out and a runner a first the Wildcats got what looked like a tailor-made double play ball to short, but an error extended the inning and proved to be the turning point of the game. Concordia would go on to add five more runs on four base hits to take a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the inning.

LC only managed two more base runners in their final three trips to the plate as Concordia added another run on a solo home run in the sixth to create the final 7-1 edge in game one.

Game Two

In direct opposition to the first game, the Wildcats would capitalize on early base runners in game two. With Shelby Bergeron on third and Alyssa Ross standing at second, Maicey Spiller hit a ball to the short stop's right that plated Bergeron easily on the infield single, but with the speed of Ross plated two runs as she raced around third to put LC up 2-0 after the first inning.

The Tornado would lead off the second with a solo home run, the only real offensive threat for Concordia through six innings as starter Madison Dykes kept the Tornado off balance and didn't allow a runner passed second base after the home run.

The Wildcats would answer the solo shot with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a 2-out base hit from Abby Sterling, plating Briley Johnston from second. She would pick up another RBI and make it 4-1 two innings later on an opposite field solo home run, her ninth long ball of the season. The Cats had chances to extend their lead in both the fifth and sixth but could not get the key hit that would do so, something that would come back to haunt them in the seventh.

After two errors on one play put a runner at third, who would score on a groundout to second, LC had two outs and a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning. Three straight walks, that also included a wild pitch and passed ball made it a 4-3 game with runners at the corners. A base hit to right tied the game at four, which was followed by another walk to load the bases. CTX added two more runs on a fifth walk and a hit batter, with the bases loaded, to take the 6-4 lead before the final out was recorded on a ground ball to second.

The Wildcats would go down in order in the bottom of the inning and suffer yet another late inning collapse and drop the series to Concordia via the doubleheader sweep.

The teams will conclude the three game series with the finale scheduled for a 10 a.m. first pitch at Wildcat Park. Stay connected to Louisiana College softball by following @LC_sftball on Twitter.
