Cats Split with Eagles

In a pair of offensively potent games, the Louisiana College baseball team split their first two games of a three game American Southwest Conference road series with the University of the Ozarks. LC got out to an early lead in game one and cruised to an 11-5 win, while both teams broke out the hit stick in game two with 34 combined hits, but the Cats would fall in the shootout 17-12 to the Eagles.

Game One

The Wildcats wasted no time breaking out the bats in the first game of the day against Ozarks. Two straight walks to start the game created the first scoring opportunity for the Cats with Clayton Noakes belting a 3-run home run over the right field fence to make it a 3-0 game three batters into the day.

Ozarks scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, but the Wildcats weren't done with the early crooked numbers. Ty Morgan led off the second with a solo home run and back-to-back doubles by Ashton Martin and Brady Atkins put another run on the board making it 5-1 Wildcats. Dane Pedersen would make it a five run inning with a shot down the left field line, the second 3-run blast of the game for the Cats. LC held an 8-1 lead after just two innings of play.

The Eagles picked up three runs in the fifth to make it a 9-4 game but Dylan Keller brought in a pair on a 2-out single to right making 11-4 Wildcats midway through the sixth. A solo home run with 2-out in the seventh was the final run for the Eagles but fell well short of any sort of comeback.

Deauton Delgado picked up his sixth win of the season and Noakes hit his eighth home run of the season.

Game Two

The second game of the day had a much different feel as the hits were plentiful for both sides in a shootout in the truest sense of the word. Ozarks had a 3-0 lead after scoring three in the second inning, which was immediately answered by a three spot from the Wildcats, off the bat of Christian Vandergrift with another 3-run long ball on the day for LC. Dylan Keller would get in on the action in the fourth with yet another 3-run home run in the top of the fourth to put the Cats up 6-3.

A four-run, five-hit inning in the bottom of the fourth put the Eagles back on top and the race to the ninth was on, and it was a matter of who would outscore the other. Deauton Delgado plated a pair in the fifth on a double to center to put LC back on top, only to surrender the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Down 12-9 going to the sixth, the Wildcats would once again make a comeback to tie things. Clayton Noakes delivered an RBI double to left then back-to-back RBI singles from Keelyn Johnson and Delgado tied the game at 12 midway through the sixth. Ozarks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, and pushed their lead further in the seventh with three more runs on five hits making it 16-12. The Wildcats would run out of comebacks this time though as the Eagles took the second game by a 17-12 final.

The teams will finish their three game series on Saturday afternoon in Arkansas with a 12 p.m. first pitch. Stay connected to Louisiana College baseball by following @LC_bsb on Twitter. For general athletics news follow @LC_Wildcats on Twitter or like Louisiana College Wildcats on Facebook.
