Cats Suffer Another Late Collapse

Despite leading the entire game, the Louisiana College softball team suffered yet another late-inning comeback. McMurry University scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and won the series finale on Sunday afternoon with a walk-off grand slam 9-5. LC will host Concordia (TX) this week as they celebrate senior weekend at Wildcat Park.

The Wildcats took the lead in the top of the first inning on a Shaye Tredinich RBI-single up the middle with two gone in the frame. An LC error in the bottom of the first led to an RBI single for McMurry to tie the game at one after one. The War Hawks would take the lead in the next inning following another LC error to start the inning on an RBI ground out.

A clutch 2-out home run though by Abby Sterling would tie the game in the top of the third and give LC some momentum. They would add two more runs in the fourth when freshman Maicey Spiller hit a 2-out double to right to double the Wildcats' score and give them the 4-2 advantage. They would make it 5-2 in the fifth on a Tredinich sacrifice fly to center.

With freshman ace Sarah Gartman in the circle, and pitching well to that point, despite giving up the two unearned runs, things looked promising for the Wildcats to pull out the series victory. McMurry would put together a 2-out rally in the bottom of the fifth, though and scored two runs on a couple of base hits to make it a 5-4 game after five innings of play.

Gartman got the Hawks in order in the sixth, but the LC offense was not able to provide any insurance in the top half of the inning. It didn't take long for the War Hawks to seize the momentum in the bottom of the seventh as the second batter of the frame hit a home run easily clearing the left field wall to tie the game at five. A double and back-to-back singles loaded the bases for the War Hawks putting them in prime position to walk-off with the win. A high fly ball to left cleared the fence and McMurry would complete the comeback and win with the walk-off grand slam taking the game 9-5 over LC.

The Wildcats play the next six games at home, including a three game conference series with Concordia starting Thursday afternoon.
