Cardiac Cats At It Again

Down to their final out and their final strike on four different occasions, the Louisiana College baseball team scored four runs to force extra innings against Hardin-Simmons University on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats would scratch across a run in the top of the 12th and behind the combine eight scoreless innings from Caleb Prejean and Phillip Vidrine, come away with a dramatic 6-5 win over the Cowboys.

Hardin-Simmons came out firing on all cylinders early in the game scoring five runs off LC starter Andrew Robinson in four innings with eight total hits. The Wildcats were only able to put one run on the board in that time on an Ashton Martin double play ball in the top of the third that made it 2-1 HSU at the time.

The Wildcats would go to the bullpen to start the fifth inning as Caleb Prejean entered and immediately stifled the HSU bats. He would give up just four hits through 4.1 innings of work with four strikeouts before giving way to fellow senior Phillip Vidrine with one out and runners at second and third who would get out of the inning.

The drama and momentum had swung entirely to the LC dugout in the top of that inning though. After being shut down for 8.2 innings by HSU starter Clift, the Cowboys would finally go to the bullpen with runners at first and second and two out.

Brodie Falgoust kept the game alive beating out an infield single to load the bases for the top of the LC lineup. Brady Atkins delivered a 2-run single to right which was followed by another infield single, this time from Christian Vandergrift that made it a one-run game at 5-4. Down to their final strike for the third straight batter, Clayton Noakes hit a bouncing ball to third which was bobbled and allowed just enough time for him to beat the throw to first and tie the game at five. The inning ended on a strikeout but the Cats had rallied once again with their backs against the wall to extend the game.

The Cats had chances to win the game in the 10th and 11th innings with a lead off double from Keelyn Johnson and a single from Falgoust respectively but each time could not get the clutch hit that would give them the lead. Vidrine cruised through the 10th with a 1-2-3 frame and worked around a leadoff single to send the game to the 12th still tied at five.

For the third straight inning LC would get the leadoff man on as Noakes reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a perfect sacrifice bunt by Deauton Delgado, the Cats would finally get their key hit when Johnson ripped one back up the middle to put LC on top for the first time in the game at 6-5.

In the bottom of the inning the Cowboys would get the leadoff run on board and miss ending the game on a walk-off home run by mere inches two batters later, but Vidrine would complete the comeback. After a foul out to third, the senior would get the final batter on three pitches as the Cats rushed the field to celebrate the dramatic victory.

The Wildcats will travel to Arkansas next weekend for their final road series of the season before hosting ETBU to close the regular season the last weekend of April.
