Cats Drop Pair to Cowboys

Louisiana College baseball played the first two games of an important American Southwest Conference series with Hardin-Simmons University on Friday afternoon. In two tightly contested games the Wildcats would come up short on an extra innings walk-off in game one and an early crooked number that cost them in game two.

Game One

After two and a half innings, Hardin-Simmons broke the scoreless tie on an RBI single following a leadoff triple. They got another via some small ball and another RBI single and a third on an error in left field that made it 3-0 Cowboys after three. The Wildcats though would have an immediate and resounding answers in the top of the fourth.

The first two batters of the inning would reach base before Dane Pedersen would rip a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to tie the game at three. At the end of a quality at-bat, Deauton Delgado put the Cats on top with a solo shot to left center, making it 4-3 LC. HSU though would tie the game in the bottom of the inning with the first three batters reaching base including an RBI single through the right side.

After HSU took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats would once again answer in their next trip to the plate. After a pair of fly balls to right, Ashton Martin would hit his first career home run to tie the game with 2-out in the inning. LC had a chance to take the lead in the seventh with a leadoff walk to Christian Vandergrift who stole second, with the heart of the lineup coming to the plate. The Cats would strikeout twice and pop out to first leaving the go ahead run at second base.

The Cats would escape HSU's attempt to win the game in the seventh after a leadoff single, with a flyout and a 3-2 strikeout. The game though would come to an end in the eighth with a leadoff infield single and advancement to second on a groundout to first. An intentional walk to setup a potential double play put a runner at first but a second walk, on four pitches, loaded the bases with 1-out. The Cowboys would win the game during the next at-bat on a wild pitch 6-5 that scored the run from third.

Game Two

The Wildcats would get on the board first in the second game after six quick outs to start the game in the first. Back-to-back singles put runners on base for Dylan Keller who hit a 2-run triple to left center with 2-out. HSU would respond in the bottom of the inning, starting off with a triple and cutting the lead in half on a sacrifice fly to right. An RBI double tied the game and a single and throwing error added two more runs making it 4-2 after two innings.

The game stayed locked at 4-2 through the next three innings until Keelyn Johnson led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run, but that would be all for the Cats as the next three batters were retired in order after a pitching change. HSU took that run right back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to right. The Wildcats would have no answer in the top of the seventh with a strikeout and a pair of ground balls to short.
