Wildcats Split First Two with War Hawks

After having their home series last weekend rescheduled due to weather, the Louisiana College softball team finally returned to play on Friday afternoon for a pair of games with McMurry University. The Wildcats had little trouble in game one, riding the stellar pitching of Sarah Gartman to a 7-0 win. The second game however turned out much differently as McMurry used a 10-run inning to win via the run rule in five innings 11-3.

Game One

The Wildcats started fast and strong in the first game of the day with Alyssa Ross hitting a double that easily scored Briley Johnston from second for the game's first run. She was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple, costing LC another run as Abby Sterling would homer to right on the very next pitch. The Wildcats would have the 2-0 lead after their first at-bat, and Gartman would go to work.

The freshman from Kinder retired the first 12 batters she would face in order, throwing a perfect game through four innings of play. The LC offense though could not add to the slim two run lead during the next three frames and it almost came back to bite them. A bloop single to start the fifth ended the perfection and no-hitter, which was followed by a pair of infield singles to load the bases with no-out. Gartman would pitch out of the jam getting a strikeout, a soft liner to first, and a fly ball to center to keep McMurry off the scoreboard and preserve the lead.

The Wildcat offense would continue to look for answers until the seventh inning when they would rally for five runs thanks to some miscues by the McMurry defense. Jade Brady, Shaye Tredinich, and Samantha Cetta would get the only three RBI of the five runs that were scored in the inning but the 7-0 lead would be more than enough insurance for Gartman to finish the game in the seventh.

Game Two

LC started the second game of the day much like they did the first as Alyssa Ross would hit a leadoff triple to right center then score on a squeeze bunt by Sami Walters to give LC the 1-0 lead just two batters into the game. The War Hawks would tie the game in the bottom of the second after an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach, who came in on a double two batters later.

The Wildcats would go back on top in the third, thanks to another leadoff triple from Ross and a bunt from Walters. This time though two runs would score as a pair of throwing errors by the War Hawks would allow the Wildcats' speedy second baseman to circle the bases for a little league home run.

With LC up 3-1 entering the bottom of the third, the proverbial wheels would come off the Wildcat bus. Two walks and a double tied the game before a pitching change, but the War Hawks were far from done as they would send 15 batters to the plate in the inning and score a total of 10 runs on six hits and three Wildcat errors to put themselves in position to win the game in five innings via the run-rule.

LC would get a pair of runners on in the fourth but were unable to bring them around to get within the magic number to extend the game, and went down in order in the fifth to officially bring and end to the second game of the day.

The Wildcats and War Hawks are scheduled to play the series finale on Saturday at 11am, but impending weather conditions may force a postponement to later in the day or Sunday.
