Keller Day for the Wildcats

After their dramatic come from behind win on Thursday the Louisiana College baseball team returned to the diamond on early Saturday for a doubleheader against Iowa Wesleyan at Billy Allgood Field. There were no late inning dramatics needed for game one as the Cats breezed to a 9-1 win, although a clutch 2-out double in the sixth was needed for LC to come away with the 2-1 win in game two. The two teams will play another pair on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m.

Game 1

After a scoreless first, Dylan Keller started the scoring for the Wildcats with a ringing double of the wall in left center field to put the Cats up 1-0. Three batters later lead off man Brady Atkins doubled to right to plate Keller and Nick Moreau, who reached on a walk, to make it 3-0 LC after two innings.

It would be 4-0 Wildcats, following another Atkins RBI, before Iowa Wesleyan would get their first hit or first base runner. Starting pitcher Deauton Delgado was on his game on the bump throwing four perfect innings with seven strikeouts. A leadoff double in the fifth would break of the perfection and the no-no at the same time. The shutout would go by the wayside three batters later on a 2-out single to center.

The Wildcats responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning putting together another impressive 2-out rally to all but secure the win in game one. Two walks and a base hit loaded the bases for Keller, who shot one through the right side for two more RBIs making it 6-1 LC. Moreau followed suit with a 2-run single to center and would eventually come home on a double steal of second and home, making it 9-1 Cats at the end of five.

Nothing would slow down Delgado from that point as he blew through the lineup again following the lone run and pair of hits in the fifth retiring six of the final eight batters he would face, and striking out the side in the seventh for his first complete game of the season. Delgado would lower his ERA by almost 3.00 with a season best 12 strikeouts giving up just one run on two hits.

Game 2

The Wildcats had plenty of offense in the first game of the day, scoring nine runs on nine hits, but game two was a different story as the pitching and defense would rule the day. Neither team would get a runner passed second base through the first three and a half innings, with Jacob Buchanan turning in a gem through the first four innings, allowing just one batter to reach on a walk with seven strikeouts.

A 2-out walk to Deauton Delgado started another mini-rally for the Wildcats in the fourth. Dyaln Keller would come through again with a single to center that allowed Delgado to score all the way from first after an error in center and put the Wildcats ahead 1-0 after four innings.

Konnor McDermott took over on the mound in the fifth and cruised through the inning but ran into some trouble in the sixth after an error on a potential double play ball extended the inning. A base hit to center by the Tigers would tie the game at one, but McDermott would settle and home them to just the one, setting the stage for another exciting finish.

It would be the man of the hour, Dylan Keller, that would come through for the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth. With Delgado reaching on a 2-out base hit to left, Keller drilled a 1-0 pitch beyond the left fielder and brought Delgado all the way around from first to put LC right back in the lead 2-1.

The Wildcats would turn to Phillip Vidrine to close the door on game two and the senior would do just that getting a pair of easy fly balls to the outfield and strikeout to secure the 2-1 win and Saturday doubleheader sweep.

Buchanan had his best outing of the season but received a no decision turning in 4.0 innings of hitless work with seven Ks. McDermott picked up his second win of the season with a pair of Ks in 2.0 inning of work and Vidrine earned his first save of the season.

Keller went 4-for-5 on the day with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Leadoff man Brady Atkins was 5-for-7 on the day and freshman Nick Moreau went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.
