Wildcats Complete Weekend Sweep

The Louisiana College baseball team played their final two games of their four game weekend series with Iowa Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon with two very different kinds of games, but both ending with Wildcat wins. Game one say an offensive barrage from the Wildcats scoring 15 runs with 10 extra base hits in route to a 15-4 win. Game two saw only three combined runs with the Wildcats getting the walk-off 2-1 win on an error in the infield.

Game 1

Things got off to a rough start for pitcher Andrew Robinson who surrendered a double and triple to the first two batters of the game with Iowa getting two runs in the innings to take the early lead. The Tigers' advantage would only last until the bottom of the innings. After back-to-back doubles got the Wildcats on the board, they would load the bases with 1-out. An error allowed the tying run to score, which was followed by a bases loaded walk to Dane Pedersen, and Ty Morgan's 2-run single gave LC the 5-2 lead after one.

After the rough start in the first, Robinson settled into the game nicely and through the next four innings only giving up one hit and retiring 11 of the next 13 batters he would face. Meanwhile the Wildcat offense would continue to click on all cylinders sending nine or more batters to the plate in both the second and third innings.

Christian Vandergrift sent a laser over the right center field wall on the first pitch of the bottom of the second. Ashton Martin doubled in a run, and came around on Pedersen's single making it 8-2 after two. Back-to-back doubles in the third kept the hit parade rolling which scored another run and set up Clayton Noakes' 2-run home run to make it 11-2 three batters into the inning. A couple more base hits from Nick Moreau and Brady Atkins made it an 11-run lead after three innings.

Brayden Miles doubled in the sixth for another RBI and the Wildcats' 15thrun would come on a sacrifice fly from Konner James later in the frame. LC hit eight doubles in the game, tying the team record for most in a single game, with Keelyn Johnson tying the individual record of three doubles, going 4-for-4 in the game.

Game 2

After the offensive showcase of game one the pitchers and defense would rule the day in game two with runs coming at a premium, despite the Wildcats' multiple chances to break the game open.

The first run of the game would come on a Clayton Noakes RBI-single to left, with the Wildcats looking for more with back-to-back walks to load the bases. The clutch 2-out hit that LC had seen so much of over the past few games would not come this time leaving the bases juiced.

Fortunately for the Wildcats, pitcher Colten Newsom was handling the IW lineup with relative ease, making the 1-0 lead that lasted for six innings seem like a 10-0 lead. Newsom retired 12 in a row from the first through the end of the fourth.

The Wildcats left 10 runners on base in the game and five runners in scoring position between the second and sixth inning, including another bases loaded situation with not runs coming in to score.

Still holding the 1-0 lead going into the top of the seventh, one pitch would change the dynamic of the game, as the leadoff batter blasted a 2-2 pitch over the right center field wall to tie the game. The Wildcats would go to the bullpen for Phillip Vidrine who slammed the door on any momentum, but would send things to the bottom of the inning with LC hoping for another appearance from the rally bird to end the game on a walk off.

Keelyn Johnson drew a leadoff walk to put the winning run on base, with pinch runner Brodie Falgoust moving to second on sacrifice bunt from Noakes. A wild pitch put him at third and set up the final play. Dane Pedersen would pound a bouncing ball to the drawn in shortstop who had his backhand stab bounce off his glove, giving Falgoust the window he needed to slide in safely for the game winning run.

The Wildcats completed the four game sweep of Iowa Wesleyan and have now won seven games in a row and improved their record to 11-5 overall with two big conference series coming up over the next two weekends.
