Baseball Gets First Two in Jackson

After almost two weeks away from American Southwest Conference play, Louisiana College baseball returned to action against Belhaven University on Friday night. The Wildcats and Blazer played the first two games of their three game series with LC getting a hard fought 4-1 win in game one and a much easier 12-3 victory in the nightcap. The Wildcats will try for their first ASC sweep since 2016 on Saturday.

Game 1

The Wildcats struck first in the doubleheader opener as leadoff batter Brady Atkins reached on a single through the left side then eventually would come home on a Clayton Noakes base hit to left three batters later. They would look for more in the frame after loading the bases but the 2-out hit would not come and the Cats would settle for the 1-0 lead.

LC starter Deauton Delgado picked up right where he left off in his last start retiring the first six batters in a row to start the game and by the time Belhaven had their first hit, they were down 3-0. Dane Pederson would take the first pitch he saw over the fence for a 2-run home run in the top of the third, that would prove to be the difference in the game.

A leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth would set the table for the only Blazer run of the game as a base hit would bring the run around making it 3-1 Wildcats after four. LC wouldn't threaten in the fifth or sixth innings to add to their lead but Belhaven would get one hit away from potentially tying the game.

The Blazers loaded the bases with 1-out in the sixth on three straight base hits. After a brief discussion on the mound, Deauton Delgado got the next two batters to fly out and groundout to escape with no damage done. LC would add one run in the seventh on a Delgado base hit. He would take the mound for the seventh and get the first two outs before surrendering a walk that brought Phillip Vidrine in out of the bullpen. The senior would throw one pitch and field the comebacker to him for the final out, giving the Cats the 4-1 win and Vidrine his second save.

Game 2

An error in the bottom of the second would lead to the first run of the game for the Blazers. They would add two more in the inning, both unearned, on a pair of base hits and take the 3-0 lead on the Wildcats.

LC would respond with a mini 2-out rally in the third as Clayton Noakes hit a long double to left to score a run from first, and was immediately brought in on a Deauton Delgado base hit to center. They would take the lead in their next trip to the plate after a pair of walks to start the inning and a 2-run double from Brady Atkins that put the Cats up 4-3 after four.

Relief pitcher Konner McDermott would keep the Blazers at bay for 3.1 innings, in route to his second win of the season, as the Wildcats blew the game open in the top of the seventh inning. They would send 12 batters to the plate in the inning and score six runs on eight hits. Five of the first six batters reached via a base hit before Keelyn Johnson ripped a ball down third base line to plate two runs and make it 8-3 Wildcats.

LC would score two more on two more base hits in the inning and then Johnson would pick up two more RBI in his next at-bat in the eighth to give LC and even bigger 12-3 lead.

The Wildcats will attempt to complete their first ASC sweep since 2016 on Saturday as they finish the series with a noon first pitch against Belhaven.
