Softball Splits with SUNY

After suffering a three game sweep at the hands of ETBU, the Louisiana College softball team spent one more day in Marshall, Texas to play a doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta. The Wildcats would split the double dip with the Red Dragons losing game one 6-3 but rallying for the 8-6 win in the nightcap, with four runs coming in the top of the seventh.

Game 1

The Wildcats took the lead in the first inning of game one as Taylor Hammock scampered home after a wild pitch,  but that would be all LC would get from their bases loaded 1-out situation to start the game. SUNY tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center. They would then take the lead in the third after a single, two steals, and another base hit to make it 2-1.

Sami Walters tied the game in the next half inning on an infield single but was tagged out trying to advance to second after a brief rundown. The next two innings would prove to be the downfall for the Wildcats as Oneonta would put four runs up, two in each at-bat, to take the 6-2 lead after five.

The Cats had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the seventh, after scoring one run on a Kaityln Moore single to right brought the tying run to the plate. A groundout and a walk put her on first with 2-out, but the big bases loaded hit would not come again for the Wildcats and the game would end at 6-3.

Game 2

Two scoreless innings to start sent things to the third with Briley Johnston and Shelby Bergeron setting the table for the first two runs of the game. The slappers reached base and put themselves in scoring position with their legs, allowing Shaye Tredinich to bring them in on a sharp single up the middle with 2-out.

The lead would disappear in the bottom of the inning though as SUNY came right back with a pair of runs of their own. LC though would regain the advantage with two more runs in the fourth with an RBI groundout by Samantha Cetta and a bases loaded walk to Taylor Hammock.

SUNY would have a big inning in the fifth scoring three runs, then another in the sixth to take the 6-4 lead into the seventh inning. Just as they did in the first game the Wildcats would rally in the seventh, only this time get the hit they needed to go ahead. A Tredinich single through the left side made it a 1-run game and put the tying run on base. Kayelea Dearmon was inches from giving the Cats the lead on a blast to left center field that hit the top of the wall and bounced back on the field for a double.

With the bases loaded again, Sami Walters hit a chopper back up the middle that didn't make it to the outfield but a slight bobble at second allowed two runs to score and put LC ahead 7-6. The would add an insurance run on a perfectly placed bunt from Bergeron right in front of the plate bringing Allie Liles in from third. Sarah Gartman, who entered the game late in the fifth, finished the game in the seventh with a strikeout and two ground balls to short to get her sixth win of the season.

The Wildcats continue conference play this week with a three game series with UT Dallas at Wildcat Park beginning on Thursday afternoon.
