Wildcats Take First Two from Comets

The Louisiana College softball team opened their American Southwest Conference schedule on Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader against UT Dallas. After a tough weekend in Marshall the Wildcats responded with two big wins to start the series with the Comets getting an 8-0 shutout in five innings in game one and a 9-5 win in game two. The Wildcats will try and complete the sweep of UTD on Friday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 pm at Wildcat Park.

Game 1

The Wildcats wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first after a leadoff bunt single from Shelby Bergeron and a swipe of second putting her in scoring position right away. Taylor Hammock delivered a ringing double down the left field line to put LC up 1-0 two batter into the game. Shaye Tredinich's base hit back up the middle and a bobble in center allowed the next run to score to put the Cats up by two after the first inning.

The two runs would likely have been enough for the Wildcats in the game with freshman star Sarah Gartman in the circle and dealing early, throwing three perfect innings before giving up her first hit and baserunner on a 1-out infield single in the fourth. The Comets could not figure out Gartman the rest of the way allowing just one more hit as the Wildcat offense put up the eight runs needed to end the game in five innings.

The turning point came in the fourth for the Wildcats as they added five runs to their 2-0 lead, starting with a Bergeron RBI-single to left. A Kayelea Dearmon double two batters later made it 4-0 and Shaye Tredinich put the game nearly out of reach with a 3-run, no-doubter to straight away center field making it 7-0. It only took two batters in fifth to end the game as Alyssa Ross singled and stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and walked home on an RBI-single from Sami Walters to end the game.

Game 2

The Wildcats took the early lead in the second game with a run in the bottom of the first, with Shelby Bergeron racing home from third on a passed ball. They would add to their lead in the second on a Samantha Cetta RBI groundout. Briley Johnston would score on a bunt from Bergeron and a Taylor Hammock RBI-single through the left side would make it 4-0 Wildcats after two innings.

A quick, 1-2-3 inning from starter Madison Dykes allowed the Wildcat offense to continue to work as Cetta would come through again with a 2-out RBI double to left to plate Walters and five LC the 5-0 lead. AS the rain picked up and created a litany of ball changes and slippery conditions made it difficult for the pitchers to get solid handling on the ball. The conditions led to a UTD comeback in the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits to pull closer at 5-3.

The Wildcats would get two of the runs back right away though in the bottom of the inning as Tredinich delivered an RBI-single up the middle and Alyssa Ross plated another on a perfectly placed bunt in front of the plate making it 7-3 after four.

The Comets would make things interesting again in the sixth with two more runs to get back within a couple, but another Tredinich long ball in the bottom of the inning made it a four-run game once again and sent things to the seventh. Cameron Crochet would get the final three outs of the game and give LC the series win in the doubleheader sweep.

Freshmen pitcher Sarah Gartmen got both wins on the day, her seventh and eighth of the season, pitching a total of 8.0 innings allowing seven hits, and two unearned runs, with six strikeouts. Shaye Tredinich hit a pair of monster home runs on the day and drove in six runs in the double dip.

The Wildcats will try and complete the sweep of UTD on Friday, weather permitting, with a noon first-pitch at Wildcat Park.
